William Bragg, new CUSD schools chief
CUSD hires new superintendent
The Cupertino Union School District Board on March 28 named William Bragg as the district's new superintendent. Bragg will replace Patricia Lamson, who is retiring after seven years at the helm of the 15,000-student district.
Bragg, who is deputy superintendent for instruction in the 20,000-student Oceanside Unified School District in San Diego County, will join the Cupertino district April 7.
About 2,800 Sunnyvale kids attend CUSD schools. Four of the district's schools--Nimitz, Stocklmeir and West Valley elementary schools and Cupertino Junior High--are located in Sunnyvale.
"He loves children, is an instructional leader, has extensive classroom teaching and school-site leadership experience, and is committed to an inclusive process that involves staff, parents and the broader community," School Board President Sandra James said.
An educator since 1969, Bragg taught first through fifth grades for 12 years in Southern California. He then served as an elementary school principal and assistant superintendent for personnel in the New Haven Unified School District in Union City for four years. In 1985, he joined the Oceanside School District as an assistant superintendent for curriculum and personnel before assuming his current position.
In his 10 years as deputy superintendent, Bragg administered the implementation of class-size reduction.
