Cooper, Liew triple-winners for Fremont

By DICK SPARRER

Brian Cooper and Sueh-Han Liew gave similar sensational performances for the Fremont track and field team last week.

Unfortunately, neither was enough to lead the Firebirds to a win over Mountain View in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Cooper and Liew were each triple-winners for Fremont, but the Firebirds lost 79-48 to the Mountain View boys and 77-49 to the Mountain View girls.

Cooper took the mile in 4:54, the two-mile in 11:17.66 and the 800 meters in 2:08.76 to complete an impressive day for the Firebirds.

Roy Ross joined Cooper as a multiple winner for Fremont. Ross took both hurdle events, winning the 100 highs in 16.5 and taking the 300 intermediates in 44.58.

Domingo Garcia supported with a first in the 400 meters in 57.0 and led the Firebirds to a win in the 1600-meter relay in 3:48.94. Danny Douglas took the triple jump at 41-1.

Liew matched Cooper's effort in the girls' competition. She took the mile in 6:06, won the two-mile in 13:37.35 and was tops in the 800 in 2:49.20.

Firebirds were also winners in each of the hurdle events in the meet. Kristen Kam won the 100 hurdles in 19.27, and Melissa Gott took the 300 hurdles in 54.95.

Fremont also won the 1600 relay in 4:45.68, but that was all the Firebirds could manage in the loss to the Spartans.

Golf

Senior Mike Stahmer fired a 5-over par 40, and Mike Benkoski was close behind at 41, but the Fremont golf team dropped a 191-237 decision to Wilcox at the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course.

Junior Brendon Bartholomew carded a 49 for the Firebirds, who slipped to 0-4 in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with the loss.

Fremont had dropped a 201-269 decision to Los Gatos earlier in the week at the LaRinconada Country Club. Benkoski led the way with a 47 for the Firebirds, and Stahmer shot a 48.

Tennis

Jeff Cabell nailed a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles to lead the Homestead boys' tennis team to a 5-2 nonleague win over Los Gatos last week. The win helped the Mustangs improve to 4-7 for the year.

Daniel Kim came through with a 7-6, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles to lead Fremont to a 4-3 win over Gatos in league play last week. The Firebirds, who lost 5-2 to Cupertino later in the week, are now 4-4 in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL and 6-7 for the year.

Volleyball

Both Homestead and Fremont nailed victories in boys' volleyball action last week.

The Mustangs turned back Serra 15-11, 15-4, 15-10 and back St. Francis 15-8, 15-1, 15-1 to drive their record to 3-2 in the West Catholic Athletic League. Homestead is 11-4 for the year.

Fremont pushed its record to 9-1 for the season with a 15-6, 15-5, 15-1 win over Saratoga in a nonleague match last week.

Badminton

Natalie Woo netted a 15-1, 15-1 win in the girls' No. 1 singles spot to lead the Fremont badminton team to a 10-5 win over Santa Clara. The Firebirds are now 1-3 in the De Anza Division of the SCVAL.
