It's difficult to cover a 50,000-household community when you've only one body to send three places at the same time. The Sun's veteran news reporter, Katherine Petersen, has been flying solo since December. Although she's doing a tremendous job, we thought it was high time to give her a copilot.
In fact, we've given her two co-plots, whose names will appear in the paper next week.
Anne Gelhaus, a veteran Metro Newspapers writer, has joined The Sun as assistant editor. Her responsibilities include managing our office on South Murphy Avenue and covering the arts, entertainment and business beats. She also will revive Public Safety report, which we've brought back due to popular demand.
Gelhaus, who lives nearby, comes to The Sun from our award-winning sister paper, the Los Gatos Weekly-Times, where she covered education, arts and Town Hall. She also writes theater reviews for Metro, Santa Clara Valley's weekly.
Mike de Give, another former Weekly-Times reporter, joins The Sun as editor-in-chief. He also will serve as editor of our sister paper, the Cupertino Courier.
De Give has worked as a writer and an editor at several Bay Area newspapers, including the former Sunnyvale Valley Journal. He is eager to hear from readers and community leaders and can be reached in the Murphy Avenue office on most Fridays. Gelhaus will field calls Monday through Thursday. And, of course, Petersen will continue to cover news and the City Hall beat on a daily basis.
As for me, I will continue in my role as managing editor of The Sun and Metro's four other community newspapers. Although I'll leave most of the editing responsibilities to Mike de Give and relocate to the company's main office in downtown San Jose, I aim to stay involved in this community and The Sun.
I've grown quite fond of Murphy Avenue and its offerings during my nine months here. I'll miss having regular access to the calzones-as-big-as-your-head at Gumba's, the convenient location of the post office and ample parking (before and after lunch).
In other words, I'm leaving this office, but I'm not going away. After all, as longtime readers may recall, I helped start this paper three years ago. I'd like to help it to grow and prosper.
And, besides, I live here.
