NEWS BRIEFS

Fire causes injury, $20,000 in damage

Just after midnight on March 26, Sunnyvale Public Safety responded to a fire at 185 E. Homestead Road. The building was evacuated before firefighters arrived, said Karen O'Brien, administrative manager for fire services.

Four fire trucks and 24 officers went to the scene.

O'Brien said the blaze, contained in apartment 19, was extinguished about 15 minutes from the time of the alarm. Damage from flames was confined to one room; smoke and heat damaged the rest of the unit. Damage is estimated at $20,000.

The resident, Ben Talebi, sustained minor cuts to his hand from broken glass, and his 9-year-old son complained of smoke inhalation. Talebi and his son were treated at the scene and refused additional medical assistance, O'Brien said.

Firefighters believe the fire was caused by a cigarette that could have smoldered in a couch on the apartment's patio.

Wulfhorst resigns as commissioner

Dolowries Wulfhorst resigned March 11 from her post on the city Planning Commission.

Wulfhorst was unavail-able to comment on her departure, but her daughter, who declined to give her name, said her mother felt she had accomplished what she set out to do and that it was time to leave.

Wulfhorst, a former councilmember, left the seven-member commis-sion before the end of her term, which expires June 30, 1997. Her seat will be filled by the City Council during the spring recruitment process.

Planning officer Trudi Ryan, a city staff member who attends commission meetings, said Wulfhorst will be missed.
