Nine in a Row for Fremont

    Tulowitzski leads Firebirds to victory

    By Dick Sparrer

Troy Tulowitzski is putting on quite a display on the baseball diamond at Fremont High School this spring, both on the mound and in the batter's box.

But Tulowitzski isn't the only reason the Firebirds are 9-0 and leading the pack in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Sure Tulowitzski is having a great year for Fremont, but so are Brandon Klein, Ron Cerda, Pat Burgess and a few other 'Birds who have caught fire since the start of the league season.

Fremont got off to an 0-6 start in the nonleague season, but the Firebirds have turned it on to win nine straight to open the league campaign.

Three of those wins came last week when Tulowitzski and Burgess ripped seven hits apiece to drive the Firebirds past Palo Alto 6-5, Los Altos 11-1 and Homestead 16-3.

The first-place Firebirds opened the week against the last-place Vikings, and they found themselves down 4-0 after an inning.

Fremont picked up two in the third, but pesky Paly scored again in the bottom of the third to lead 5-2.

The Firebirds scored a run in the fifth, then had to score two in the seventh to tie it and send the game into extra innings. Fremont broke the 5-5 tie with a run in the eighth to win it.

Tulowitzski was the winning pitcher, running his season record to 4-0. He also helped the cause with a pair of singles.

Cerda doubled and singled twice, and Klein singled and doubled to drive in four runs. Burgess also ripped a pair of hits.

Burgess and Klein came back with two hits apiece and Tulowitzski tripled home a couple of runs in Fremont's 11-1 win over Los Altos two days later. Tyler Duran drove in three runs in the win.

Daniel Guevara was the winning pitcher, evening his season record at 1-1.

Fremont broke the game open with a seven-run rally in the second and won the game in five innings on the 10-run rule.

The Firebirds capped the week by romping past Homestead 16-3. Tulowitzski crushed three doubles and a single to drive in four runs, and Burgess doubled and singled twice to knock in four.

Klein blasted a home run and plated two runs, and Cerda doubled twice and singled.

Brett Bonetti doubled in a couple of runs, Nick Pullano doubled and Javier Eredia drove in two runs.

Scott Brown picked up the mound win, pushing his record to 1-2.

Fremont held just a slim 2-1 lead after four innings, but the Firebirds unloaded for six runs in the fifth, three in the sixth and five in the seventh.

Robbie Hoffman belted two hits and Bryan Beres ripped a triple to lead a six-hit Homestead offensive attack in the loss.

It was a tough week for Homestead. The Mustangs lost 10-0 to Los Altos and 3-0 to Santa Clara before losing 16-3 to Fremont to slip to 4-5 in the El Camino Division.

The King's Academy, meanwhile, won three times last week. The Knights beat Valley Christian-Dublin 7-3 and Pinewood 12-7 in Private Schools League play, then whipped St. Lawrence 10-1 in a nonleague game. Kings is now 2-1 in league play and 5-3 for the year.

    Volleyball

Junior Josh Cavin buried 12 kills to lead the Homestead boys volleyball team to a 15-7, 15-8, 15-3 win over Saratoga last week. The win left the Mustangs 2-0 in the De Anza Division and 7-3 for the year.

Fremont, meanwhile, lost a 15-11, 15-10, 15-5 decision to Los Gatos last week. The Firebirds slipped to 0-2 in the De Anza Division and to 6-7 for the year with the loss.

Fremont will try to get back on the winning track this week when they visit Homestead on April 3 and host Saratoga on April 5 for a pair of 7 p.m. matches. The Firebirds will compete in the Alisal Tournament this weekend.

    Golf

Jameel Hussein and David Krause each fired solid rounds of golf to lead Homestead to back-to-back wins over Gunn last week.

Hussein carded a two-over par 38 at the Palo Alto Golf Course to lead the Mustangs to a 212-223 win over Gunn, and Krause carded a one-over 36 at San Jose Municipal in a 205-220 win over the Titans.

Homestead had lost 207-217 to Los Altos earlier in the week at the Los Altos Country Club.

The Mustangs are now 6-1 in the De Anza Division and 9-3 for the year.
