Kathryn Neufeld wasn't unhittable for The King's Academy girls softball team last week.

    Well, not completely.

Neufeld gave up three hits in a tough 2-1 loss to Mercy to open the week, but the King's ace came back to toss consecutive no-hitters against Fremont Christian and Redwood Christian.

Neufeld blanked Fremont Christian on Wednesday, holding her opponents hitless while her teammates rallied for a 6-0 victory.

She came back on Friday to dominate Redwood Christian. Not only did she toss a second straight no-hitter, but she struck out 14 in five innings and walked just one as the Knights won 11-0.

Neufeld, whose 5-1 pitching record matches King's mark in the Private Schools League, also helped her cause at the plate with a double in the win over Redwood.

King's, 10-3 for the year, had beaten Fremont Christian 6-0 a game earlier on another no-hitter by Neufeld. The talented hurler again starred at the plate with two hits.

Shockey and Kirsten Corstorphine added two hits each in the King's victory.

The Knights had lost 2-1 to Mercy to open the week. King's outhit Mercy 6-3, but three errors proved costly for the Knights.

Neufeld was tagged with the loss, despite tossing a three-hitter. She led the Knights at the plate with two doubles and a single.

Hawley Menser supported with a pair of singles.

In other local girls softball action, Homestead won twice last week, pounding Gunn 10-0 and beating Palo Alto 8-5. The Mustangs are now 2-2 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and 6-6 for the year.

Freshman Karen Purdy fired a two-hit shutout to lead the Mustangs past the Titans. Purdy evened her pitching record at 3-3 with the win.

Danielle Bailey and Julie Colvin ripped three hits apiece for Homestead in the win. Paula Kane had two hits to knock in three runs, Shawnti Bortoli ripped a triple and Ashley Suth doubled.

Suth was the winning pitcher and Purdy was the hitting star in Thursday's 8-5 win over Paly. Suth tossed a seven-hitter to even her record at 3-3, and Purdy tripled and singled.

Homestead lost 8-0 to Pioneer in the Mission City Tournament last weekend.

Fremont split two El Camino Division games last week. The Firebirds outlasted Lynbrook 3-1 in eight innings, but lost 9-6 to Saratoga.

The Firebirds and Vikings locked up in a scoreless battle through seven innings last week. But Fremont scored three in the top of the eighth, then held on as Lynbrook answered with a run in the bottom of the frame.

Kristina Hayes singled and tripled, and knocked in two big runs in the eighth for Fremont. Robin Glass and Carolanne Fidler also had two hits apiece in the win.

But Fremont lost 9-6 to Saratoga a couple of days later. The Falcons scored four in the second, but the Lady Birds answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Saratoga scored three in the fourth, but once more Fremont answered right back. The Firebirds scored four runs to cut the Saratoga lead to 7-6. But the Falcons scored two unanswered runs in the seventh to win by three.

    Baseball

In local baseball action last week, Homestead and The King's Academy each split in league play while Fremont lost and tied in two games.

The Mustangs split a double-header with Palo Alto after losing to Gunn earlier in the week.

Homestead lost 6-1 to Paly in the first game, but won the nightcap 9-6 on a combined six-hitter by Anthony Torres and David Attard. Torres picked up his first mound win of the year and Attard nailed his first save.

Israel Trujillo doubled and singled twice and Milliken singled and doubled for Homestead in the 7-2 loss to Gunn to open the week.

Homestead will continue El Camino Division play this week, hosting Los Altos on April 4 and visiting Santa Clara on April 6 in a pair of 3:30 p.m. games.

King's pulled out an 11-5 win over Valley Christian-Dublin early in the week before losing a 2-1 heartbreaker to Fremont Christian. The Knights are 1-2 in league play and 3-4 for the year.

Fremont, meanwhile, fought Monta Vista to a 6-6 tie but lost 4-3 to Los Gatos.

Troy Tulowitzki ripped a two-run homer and Johnny Tona homered and singled twice to knock in two runs for the Firebirds in a 6-6 tie against Monta Vista. Javier Eredia singled and tripled to knock in the other two Fremont runs.

Mark Ahrens had two hits to drive in two runs, but the Firebirds lost 4-3 to Los Gatos. Pete Hernandez singled and doubled for the 'Birds and Ron Cerda doubled.

    Tennis

Ed Albanza nailed a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 4 singles, but the Fremont boys tennis team dropped a 4-3 nonleague decision to Mitty last week.

Fremont lost 7-0 to Cupertino later in the week.

In other local matches, Homestead lost 6-1 to Palo Alto to slip to 0-6 in the De Anza Division.
