Mustangs perfect
Things couldn't be going much better for the Homestead boys volleyball team this spring.
The Mustangs are off to a perfect start in the 2000 season. Homestead is 15-0 this year, including two tournament championships, and the Mustangs started the year off right in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League with wins over Saratoga and Fremont last week.
Aaron Mansfield was named the tournament most valuable player when the Mustangs finished first in the LaSerrna Tournament in Whittier on March 25. Earlier, the Mustangs had won the Aptos Tournament championship.
Homestead opened league play with an easy 15-8, 15-4, 15-6 win over Saratoga. Mansfield led the squad with 16 kills.
The Mustangs came right back with a 16-14, 15-1, 15-6 win over Fremont later in the week. Mansfield topped Homestead with 19 kills and Cameron McNeil had six for the Firebirds, who are now 6-6 for the year and 1-1 in league play.
In other local action last week, The King's Academy split a pair of matches in the Private Schools League, beating St. Lawrence Academy 15-10, 18-16, 15-4 after losing to Woodside Priory 15-10, 15-2, 15-3. The Knights are 3-9 for the year and 2-3 in league.
Firebirds split
The Fremont golf team split a pair of matches with Homestead last week, beating the Mustangs 219-230 before losing 218-224.
Freshman Jason Simon fired a one-over par 36 at the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course to lead the Firebirds to the win early in the week. Hauoli Isa finished with a 42, Eric Domke fired a 43, Jason Dreyfus shot a 47 and Glenn Marasigan carded a 51 for the 'Birds.
The Firebirds are now 1-6 in the De Anza Division of the Mount Hamilton Athletic League and the Mustangs are 1-5.
