Vorreiter, Montalvo to run for council

Ray Montalvo, a native Sunnyvale resident and director of marketing and retail operations for Le Boulanger, announced his intention to run for City Council in November. Montalvo has been involved in the Cupertino Educational Endowment Foundation, the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce and the NOVA Private Industry Council.

He says he will focus on issues such as neighborhood preservation, future growth, public safety and downtown development during his campaign. Former councilmember and mayor Fran Rowe announced her candidacy in January for the same seat. Stan Kawcynski will be vacating the seat because of term limits.

Councilmember and Vice Mayor Pat Vorreiter announced her candidacy for re-election in the November election. Vorreiter said she places a high priority on the redevelopment and revitalization of Sunnyvale's retail businesses, and she plans to continue her involvement in the future of the Ames/Moffett Complex as a research and education resource of the region.

Vorreiter serves on the National League of Cities' Board of Directors of Women in Municipal Government and as a member of the Community and Economic Development Committee. At the state level, sheserves on the League of California Cities Housing, Community and Economic Development Committee and on the board of directors of the California Space and Technology Alliance. Vorreiter serves as chair of the Cities' Association Legislative Task Force and the Santa Clara County Airport Land Use Commission. She is also a member of the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group's Housing Alliance and is a steering committee member of the Santa Clara County Housing Trust Fund Authority.

City declares weeds a public nuisance, again

Councilmember Fred Fowler called weeds "a scourge upon humanity" at last week's council meeting--part of an annual tradition in which the city declares weeds a public nuisance so that it can continue to clean them up. Municipal red tape each year necessitates the passing of a weed ordinance by which the city has the authority to rid commercial lots of weeds if property owners fail to do so themselves. Expenses are then added to property tax.

Fowler led the motion. Councilmember Julia Miller seconded, adding that the ordinance is "the right thing to do for our city and neighborhood."

Sunnyvale plays host to discussion on Bay commuter ferries

A forum to discuss the possibility of high-speed commuter ferries across the San Francisco Bay is being held April 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the main auditorium at the NASA/Ames Research Center at Moffett Field. Councilmember Julia Miller; Mary Lou Zoglin, the mayor of Mountain View; Joel Suty, the retired vice president of Lockheed Martin; and Bill Berry, the deputy director of the NASA/Ames Research Center will be presenting information and will also invite public comment. This is the last such forum before the task force presents its findings to the state for potential legislation. For more information, call the Bay Area Water Transit Initiative at (415) 981-6600.
