Ten Sunnyvale artists will showcase their best work in the 11th annual Open Studios of Santa Clara County.
The artists, whose work includes oil on canvas, pastels, and ink and gouache on paper, will join 240 valley artists participating in the event.
The Sunnyvale artists are Betty Bangs, Brigitte Curt, Carlene Fulton, Linda F. Harris, Gisele Haselbarth, Jerilyn Lightfoot, William Lum, Heidi Perera, Margaret F. Wolverton and Guang-Zhen "Poslin" Zhou.
By following the maps provided, people will be able to see artwork at up to 147 sites in the valley from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 12 and 13, April 19-20 and April 26-27.
The undertaking, sponsored by Metro Newspapers (which publishes The Sun) and the Arts Council of Santa Clara County, is aimed at introducing the public to all forms of art, according to event coordinator Lisbeth M. Kraft.
Visitors can talk with artists and buy from them directly, she said.
They will see a mix of artwork, including handmade books, calligraphy, ceramics, collage, digital imaging, jewelry, drawings, photography, printmaking, wood turning, sculpture and mixed-media paintings.
The artwork will be put on display in homes, studios and warehouses.
In past years, studio sites were generally located in San Jose. This year, the sites will be situated in more cities around the valley.
A new kind of entry this year will be San Jose Unified School District's "Saturday Academy," an exhibit on April 26 and 27 that will consist of works by artistically talented high school students.
Another addition to this year's program will be a visit to Cogswell Polytechnical College in Sunnyvale. The college offers students state-of-the-art facilities for learning computer graphics, integrated media and animations.
It will be open April 12 and 13 for visitors to view digital art that will be created by students.
Susan Harby, an associate professor of computer and video imaging at the college, will lead a demonstration.
Some 50,000 maps have been made to help people find the artists. In Sunnyvale, they can be picked up at art stores and businesses.
Catalogs listing the artists also can be purchased for $10. In Sunnyvale, they can be bought from Pantheon Fine Arts at 471 S. Murphy Ave.
Open Studios was started in 1986 by 79 artists who worked mainly in San Jose. During that year, they opened 26 studios for only one weekend.
