Council approves smoking resolution

In response to a request by a group of students from Fremont and Homestead high schools, the Sunnyvale City Council on April 2 approved a resolution to reduce tobacco advertising. Councilmembers Stan Kawczynski and Jim Roberts voted agianst the resolution. The resolution asks merchants to voluntarily move tobacco advertising from below the counter and places near candy, where are easily spotted by children.

Moffett pilots rescue aviator

The 129th Rescue Wing of the California Air National Guard, based at Moffett Federal Airfield, rescued a naval aviator April 3 after his F-18 Hornet crashed about 30 miles off the California coast near Big Sur.

A 129th Rescue Wing HC-130 tanker aircraft was on a routine training mission when it was notified by the Oakland Air Traffic Control Center that Lt. John Sedlock, 29, had ejected from his aircraft at about 3:40 p.m.

The aircraft proceeded to the scene, where a second F-18 was circling over the area where the pilot was in the water.

Rescuers dropped a survival kit to the pilot, which included a life raft, medical supplies, food, water and a radio.

A 129th Rescue Wing HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter was dispatched to the scene and rescued Sedlock at 4:55 p.m.

Sedlock, who was based at Lemoore Naval Air Station near Fresno, had been practicing air maneuvers when he was forced to eject, said Lemoore spokesman Dennis McGrath.

The tanker and helicopter used in Sedlock's rescue are specialty aircraft that can be refueled in the air, permitting them to fly 500 to 800 miles from land.
