    Neufeld tosses King's to win

Fremont wins to run record to 10-0

    By Dick Sparrer

Kathryn Neufeld was a tough pitcher last spring for the King's Academy girls softball team.

And the only thing different this season is that she's a year older.

Neufeld has been mowing down enemy hitters in the 2001 campaign, and the latest victims were the players at Notre Dame-San Jose.

Neufeld flipped a two-hit shutout to lead the Knights to a 7-0 win over Notre Dame. The win pushed the junior hurler's record to 10-3, and helped the Knights improve to 6-1 in the Private Schools League and to 11-3 for the year.

Carissa Threewitt ripped three hits and Cecily Gordon knocked in three runs to lead the offensive attack in the win over ND. Lori Threewitt had two hits to drive in a couple of runs and Gina Favero also had two hits.

The win came on the heels of two big wins by King's over Fremont Christian and Mercy of San Francisco a week earlier.

Neufeld fired a three-hitter in a 17-3 win over Fremont Christian after whirling a one-hit shutout in a 10-0 win over Mercy.

Not only did Neufeld pitch the win against Fremont Christian, she led a 15-hit King's attack with five singles to drive in four runs.

Angela Guidi doubled and singled twice for King's and C. Threewitt had three hits. Gordon drove in six runs in the win.

Neufeld singled and tripled to plate a pair of runs and also flipped a one-hit shutout in the 10-0 win over Mercy.

Gordon knocked in two runs in this one and Katie Henderson ripped a double.

Over in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, Fremont pounded Saratoga 8-0 last week to push its league record to 4-1 and even its overall mark at 6-6.

Meghan McCaul fired a no-hitter to lead the Lady Birds to the win over the Falcons. She also helped her cause at the plate with a pair of singles.

Robin Glass singled and tripled to drive in two runs for the Firebirds in the win and Kim Juanes doubled in a pair. Kristina Hayes added two hits in the win.

A week earlier, McCaul flipped a five-hit shutout in a 10-0 win over Gunn.

Glass was the hitting star in this one, too, with a single, double and triple to knock in three runs. Hayes had two hits and Kim Glass doubled in two runs.

Fremont lost a couple of recent games in the Mission City Tournament, falling 3-2 to Santa Teresa and 6-3 to Live Oak.

Juanes tossed a three-hitter against the Saints, but was tagged with the tough loss. She also led the three-hit attack for Fremont with a couple of singles.

In other El Camino Division action, Homestead blanked Cupertino 5-0 behind a two-hitter by sophomore hurler Karen Purdy.

Purdy upped her pitching record to 4-1 with the win as Homestead improved to 4-0 in the division and to 7-3 for the year.

Paula Kane's two-run double was the difference in the game for the Mustangs, who scored three runs in the second and two more in the fifth to clinch the win.

    Firebirds 10-0

Fremont kept the streak alive with another baseball win in the El Camino Division of the SCVAL.

The Firebirds turned back Santa Clara 4-3 in nine innings to run their division-leading record to 10-0. The 'Birds are 10-6 for the season.

Brandon Klein singled and doubled to drive in two runs to lead Fremont to the win. Pat Burgess also singled and doubled and Ron Cerda and Kyle Severns had two hits apiece.

Scott Brown nailed the mound win, evening his record at 2-2.

Fremont scored single runs in the first, second and third innings to jump out to a 3-0 lead. But Santa Clara matched that with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to tie it 3-3.

The clubs were scoreless in the seventh and eighth, but Fremont scored a run in the top of the ninth and made that stand up for the victory.

Homestead got even with Lynbrook last week. Or at least, the Mustangs got even against the Vikings when the two clubs met in El Camino Division action.

Homestead knocked off Lynbrook 11-5 to even its record at 5-5 in the division. The Vikes slipped to 3-5-1.

Senior catcher Gary Mullins had a big day for the Mustangs. The returning all-leaguer ripped four hits to drive in five runs in the win. Mullins tripled, doubled and singled twice against the Vikings.

Brian Maihakc and Matt Whiteman belted three hits apiece for the winners and Brandon Dougherty doubled.

Sophomore right hander Tim Strombel picked up the mound win, pushing his season record to 3-1.

Brodie Maag tripled home two runs for Lynbrook in the loss.

Over in the De Anza Division, Monta Vista lost a 10-4 nod to Milpitas to fall to 2-8 in league play.

Blake Bridges cracked two hits and Daryl Griffin ripped a double, but it wasn't enough to get the Matadors past the Trojans.

Over in the Private School League, the King's Academy beat Fremont Christian 6-0 and lost 9-2 to Redwood Christian. The Knights are now 3-2 in league play and 6-4 for the year.
