Students express the need to be aware and take care in case of a fire emergency
Eighteen elementary school students were named winners in Sunnyvale's 23rd annual Fire Safety Poster Contest sponsored by the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, the Kiwanis Club of Silicon Valley and the Chamber of Commerce. Winners were recognized at an awards presentation ceremony held during a recent city council meeting.

Each February, neighborhood resource officers with the DPS give fire safety lessons to students at Sunnyvale's 16 elementary schools. At the end of the month, the students are invited to participate in a poster-making contest that helps demonstrate what they've learned and provides feedback to officers about the effectiveness of the lessons.

Administrators from participating schools submitted the top three posters in each grade, and representatives from the Kiwanis Club selected the winners. Winning posters were selected based on creativity, design and key fire safety concepts.
Winners were treated to a pizza luncheon provided by Papa John's Pizza at the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce.
