Felder named LHS teacher of the year
Instrumental Music Teacher John Felder was named Fremont Union High School District's teacher-of-the-year from Lynbrook High School by trustees at its meeting on April 4. Felder started working in the District as a teacher in 1993 at Lynbrook High School, where he currently teaches the orchestra, concert and marching bands, jazz ensemble and AP Music Theory.
Born and raised in St. Louis, John Felder has lived in California since college and has been active as a composer, performer, and teacher. He holds a doctorate in composition from UC San Diego. As the drummer for the jazz group, "Smoke," Felder recorded an album and shared the concert stage with such luminaries like Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock and Thelonious Monk.
Homestead High names new principal
On Friday, April 7, Fremont Union High School District Superintendent Joe Hamilton announced that Al Montgomery will take over as principal of Homestead High School effective July 1. Montgomery replaces Eric Paulson, who will transfer to the helm of the Cupertino High School on that same date.
Montgomery has been principal of Santa Clara High School since 1997. In his three years at Santa Clara High School, Montgomery has been instrumental in building trust within the school community and in empowering the staff as leaders of school improvement. Montgomery holds a bachelor's degree in Political Science from Portland State University and teaching credential form the University of Oregon. He earned both his master's degree in Education and administrative credential from San Jose State University. For 29 years, he has served the district as a teacher, department chair, school improvement resource teacher, summer school principal, and assistant principal.
Matsuoka named Administrator of the Quarter
Lynbrook High School Assistant Principal Cary Matsuoka was honored as FUHSD Administrator of the Quarter by the Fremont's Board of Trustees at its meeting on April 4. Matsuoka attended UC Davis, graduating in 1979 with a degree in Nutrition Science. He earned his teaching credential in biological science, physical sciences and math in 1980 from UC Davis. Matsuoka taught for four years at a private school in Napa before moving to San Jose in 1984.
For the next 13 years, Cary Matsuoka taught AP Computer Science, chemistry, physics, and algebra at Saratoga High School. He joined the District in 1997 as assistant principal at LHS, completing his masters in Educational Administration at San Jose State University in May 1998.
