Tip a cop for Special Olympics

Sunnyvale's finest will be pouring water and helping wait tables on April 19. The city's first Tip-a-Cop will be held at Spoons Bar and Grill at 725 S. Fair Oaks Avenue in Sunnyvale. Officers and Special Olympic athletes will assist waiters at the restaurant from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Patrons will have a chance to make a donation to the Special Olympics, ask questions of Public Safety Officers and talk to the athletes. A fire rig will be outside, and Public Safety Chief Ernie Bakin is rumored to be the doorman. This is one of several fundraisers Public Safety participates in on behalf of the Special Olympics. Call Officer Marty Dale at 408.730.7145 for more information.

    City-wide sale ready to go

More than 600 people have signed up to take part in Sunnyvale's annual giant garage sale on the weekend of April 15 and 16. The sale, a tradition since 1992, provides shoppers with bargains galore and the city with a way to promote reusing items, rather than throwing them away. The city hopes to reduce the volume of items sent to landfills.

Starting at 5:30 p.m. on April 14, maps identifying officially participating homes will be available at Sunnyvale's 7-11 convenience stores and Starbucks coffee shops. Maps also will be printed in the April 15, San Jose Mercury News. The Salvation Army will be available to collect unsold items on April 16.

    Heritage Project blossoms

The Orchard Heritage Project breaks ground on Saturday, May 13, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The project will provide a slice of the valley's agricultural past, featuring an auditorium, historical displays, and an honor roll of orchard families next to the 10 acres of productive orchard. Barbecue, ice cream, fiddling, book signings, clowns, orchard tours and a silent auction are scheduled. Tickets to the event are available by calling Lillian Pang at 408.739.5004. Adult admission is $25, seniors $20, and children, $5. The exhibit is located at 550 E. Remington Drive near the Sunnyvale Community Center.

    Swim-a-Thon for Sunnyvale Pool

The Mountain View Masters Swim Team is hosting a Swim-a-Thon to raise money to help The Friends of the Fremont Pool reach their $1 million goal. The money will be used to help Sunnyvale build a new 50-meter pool at Fremont High School. The fundraiser takes place Saturday, April 22, at noon at Eagle Park, 650 Franklin Street, near the corner of Shoreline and Church in Mountain View. Call Holly Lofgren at 408.245.2875 for more information.

    Leukemia heroes sought

The Silicon Valley branch of the Leukemia Society of America and Coulter Pharmaceutical want to name their first annual Man and Woman of the Year. The titles will be bestowed on those with the most success in generating funds for the Leukemia Society of America. The goal for the campaign is $500,000. Winners will be honored in mid-June at an elegant award celebration. Nominations still are being accepted. Call Robin Melton at 408.271.2873 for more details, or log on to www.leukemianca.org.
