Lockheed honored for satellite work
Contractors from Lockheed-Martin Missiles & Space have been honored for their work on the Milstar satellite communication system, which they designed and built for the Department of Defense.
The National Space Club last month presented its 1996 Nelson P. Jackson Aerospace Award to the contractors for their "revolutionary communications concept, innovative spacecraft design and inventive program management demonstrated in the development of the Milstar system."
The aerospace award, named after the cofounder of the space club, was created to honor outstanding contributions to the missile, space and aircraft fields.
Cumberland kids get 'Bodywise'
About 250 Cumberland Elementary School students were treated to a performance by a Kaiser Permanente theater group April 10 that encouraged students to lead healthy lives.
The costumed performers in the "Bodywise" program told students from kindergarten to the third grade not to smoke or take drugs, said Debbie Staats, a member of the school's parent-teacher association.
The Oakland-based corporation developed the play with community groups that included teachers, parents, counselors and students.
Correction
A news story that ran April 10 regarding a city smoking resolution incorrectly contained "no" votes by City Councilmembers Stan Kawczynski and Jim Roberts. Kawczynski and Roberts supported the resolution.
