Coach Donna Chavez knew Mustangs would be contenders
By Dick Sparrer
First-year head coach Donna Chavez knew going into the season that her Homestead golf team would be solid this spring.
And she should know. After all, Chavez is not exactly like most first-year coaches. She's had 32 years of teaching experience, she's the head of the physical education department at Homestead, she's coached a number of different sports through the years... and she just happen to hold a single index at the Ridgemark Country Club in Hollister.
So when Chavez says the Mustangs look good, they probably look good. And they certainly have this spring, winning eight of 10 matches in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Mustangs ran their record to 8-2 last week with a 196-206 win over Cupertino at the Sunnyvale Municipal Golf Course. Senior Jameel Hussein fired a one-over par 36 to lead the Mustangs to the victory.
Freshmen David Krause and Daniel Cochran and transfer Eric Domke are other key players for the Mustangs.
Hussein had shot even par with a 30 at Sea Cliff earlier in the week to lead the Mustangs to a 163-171 win over the Pioneers. Cupertino, led most of the year by junior Mohammad Gorjestani, slipped to 2-8 in the division with the two losses.
Homestead had dropped a tough 198-201 decision at Sunnyvale Muni to Los Altos a week earlier.
In other local action, Fremont lost twice recently, falling 198-220 to Los Altos at Shoreline and 219-247 to Gunn at Sunnyvale.
