Mark Cardarelli, 8, and his dog Stout on April 5 became unlikely heroes. While Mark was walking Stout in his Lewiston Court neighborhood about 4 p.m., the dog began barking at a friend's house on the block. As Mark got closer, he heard the smoke alarm blaring and smelled smoke. No one answered the door, so Mark rushed home and his mother, Doris, called 911. Sunnyvale firefighters entered the house and found a smoldering, melted pot on the lit stove. Firefighters and the owners of the home congratulated Mark. Fire officials said his actions prevented the house from further fire damage.
