Literary achievement

Four Fremont Union High School District students have won recognition in 1996 Annual Young Writers Competition.

Shaw San Liu of Lynbrook High School won second place and $150 in the prose writing contest. In the same category, Kathryn Carrieri of Homestead High won third place and $100 and Amy Tipton of Fremont High School won honorable mention and $50.

In the poetry contest, Aliza Pressman of Lynbrook High School won honorable mention and $50 cash.

The four students joined eight other 11th and 12th grade students from the South Bay who won cash awards or honorable mentions. A five-member panel of authors and literary educators judged nearly 200 entries on originality, content and style.

The public is invited to an awards reception and reading at the Montalvo Oval Garden in Saratoga on May 5, from 1 to 3 p.m.

The competition, in its tenth year, was sponsored by the James D. Phelan Trust of the Community Foundation of Santa Clara County. For more information, call 741-3421.
