It's called the Hampton-Phillips Invitational.
The meet is named for Olympic medalists Millard Hampton and Andre Phillips, who competed as high school and collegiate athletes on the track at San Jose City College.
Fremont's Joe Naivalu and Cupertino's Jeff Hesse would have made both Hampton and Phillips proud with their performances at the rugged meet held last Saturday at San Jose City.
Naivalu won three events and Hesse sprinted to a first and third to lead all local finishers in the invitational meet.
Naivalu set a new meet record in the 100-meter high hurdles in 14.06 and added wins in the 100 meters at 10.95 and the 400-meter intermediate hurdles to star for Fremont. He also helped the Indians to a third in the 400 relay in 43.77.
Hesse was equally impressive. The Cupertino speedster sprinted to a win in the 200 meters in 22.50 and was third in the 100 in 11.22.
Mike Whitaker of Cupertino came through with a second in the triple jump at 42-31/2, and Homestead's Mary Lucido nailed a second in the girls' 3,200 meters in 11:50.52.
Naivalu was coming off of an impressive showing at the Arcadia Invitational in Southern California. The senior sensation was first in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 37.5, second in the 100-meter highs in 13.99 and fifth in the 100 in 11.08.
