    'Steel Magnolias' Onstage

    The Studio Theatre of California will perform Robert Harling's "Steel Magnolias" April 27 and 28 and May 4, 5, 11 and 12 at 8 p.m. at the Congregational Community Church in Sunnyvale, 1112 Bernardo Ave. The performance will include many Bay Area residents. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and seniors, with a $2 discount for pre-ordered tickets. For tickets or more information, call 408.866.7870.

    Health and Safety Fair

    The City of Sunnyvale, Sunnyvale Rotary Club and more than 40 local agencies will be hosting a free community Health and Safety Fair on April 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Columbia Neighborhood Center, 785 Morse Ave, Sunnyvale. The family-oriented fair will provide parents to apply for free or low-cost health insurance for their children. There will also be free health screenings, free fingerprinting, bone marrow registration, a bike rodeo and information on subjects ranging from bicycle safety to lead poisoning. There will also be demonstrations, activities, entertainment and a raffle. The "Perfection on Wheels" BMX bike stunt team will put on a "big air ramp show" at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. For more information, call 408.523.8150.

    Silicon Valley Open Studios

    More than 350 artists working in media from oils and acrylics on canvas to pencil and ink, ceramics and mosaics, blown glass, quilting, photography and much more will be opening their studios all over Silicon Valley April 28 and 29 for a self-guided tour from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Campbell, Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Santa Clara, Saratoga, Stanford, Sunnyvale and San Jose.     Older Americans Month

    May is Older Americans Month, and the Sunnyvale Senior Center, sponsored by the city of Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Department, will host a variety of events throughout the month. A barbecue will be held May 4 at noon, with entertainment following at 1 p.m. in the senior center, Room 601. Tickets for the barbecue lunch must be purchased by May 2. An Older Americans Month dance will be held May 9 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the senior center, Room 601. For more information about these and other events, call 408.730.7360.

    Annual Book and Bake Sale

    St. Thomas Episcopal Church will hold its 19th Annual Book and Bake Sale on April 29 from 9 a.m. to noon in Cowans Hall at the church, 231 Sunset Ave, Sunnyvale. Used books, games, puzzles, CDs and baked goods will be available.

    Volunteers needed for ESL/Citizenship Class

    The Sunnyvale/Cupertino Adult and Community Education School needs volunteers for its ESL/Citizenship Class, which will be held on May 19 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Adult Education Center, 591 W. Fremont Ave, Sunnyvale. The class is designed to help participants prepare for their citizenship interviews by practicing with volunteers.     Planning for Retirement

    The Fremont Union School District and Community Education Program is holding a workshop about investing on April 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Adult Education Center, 589 W. Fremont Ave, Sunnyvale. The workshop will include information on coping with inflation and taxes, social security's role in retirement and more. Cost for the course is $29.
