    Sun shines at Hampton-Phillips Classic

Fremont's Sadella, Barkley place at Frosh-Soph Classic

    By Dick Sparrer

The sun came out Saturday after a couple of wet, dreary days in the Santa Clara Valley.

But the sun wasn't all that was shining on Saturday over at Silver Creek High School in the Evergreen area--so were Garrett Ince and Jason Martinez of the Monta Vista track team.

The two each finished among the leaders in the annual Hampton-Phillips Classic track and field meet.

Ince and Martinez finished two-three in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles for the Matadors. Ince finished second in 59.38 and Martinez was close behind in third in 1:01.08.

The race just could have served as an indication of what's to come at the league finals in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. Because it was Saratoga's David Cheng winning the event in 59.09 with his league rivals close behind.

That league meet is coming up soon, too. The league trials and finals will be held May 1 and May 3 at De Anza Community College in Cupertino. The top finishers there advance to CCS competition.

The best of the Central Coast Section track and field athletes were to compete at Los Gatos in the CCS Top-8 meet last Friday night, but Mother Nature had other ideas.

Rain washed away the Friday meet that has now been rescheduled for April 27, 5 p.m., at Los Gatos. The male and female athletes with the top eight times in the CCS are invited to compete in the meet.

    Frosh-Soph Classic

Younger area athletes had their day in the sun a couple of weeks earlier in the CCS Frosh-Soph Classic hosted by Los Gatos.

There were no local winners, but at least three area athletes came close by finishing among the top four in the field that included the section's top freshman and sophomore competitors.

Dana Underwood and Shariq Hashmi of Monta Vista and Chris Deal of Lynbrook each finished among the leaders at the tough meet.

Underwood raced to a second-place finish in the girls 800 meters, stopping the watch at 2:25.0.

Underwood's Lynbrook teammates Tiffany Fong, Karen Stringer and Catherine Suen also placed in the meet. Fong was 10th in the 300-meter low hurdles in 56.9, Stringer was 11th in the 400 in 1:04.8 and Suen was 11th in the 200 in 29.4.

Over on the boys side, Hashmi sprinted to a fourth-place finish in the 200 meters in 24.14. He was also sixth in the 100 meters in 11.6 for the Matadors.

Deal was the Lynbrook leader in the meet. Deal had the top finish for the Vikings with a third in the boys triple jump at 36-0 1/2. Teammate Allen Chang was 14th at 34-7 1/4, and Eugene Berson of Lynbrook was 15th in the 1,600 meters in 4:58.9.

Diane Lin was and sixth in the girls triple jump at 29-8 1/2 and seventh in the long jump at 13-10 for Lynbrook.

Julie Chen was fifth in the 100 meter high hurdles in 17.89, Francine Lee was ninth in the 1,600 meters in 5:40.2 and Laura Hsieh was 14th in the 800 in 2:43.6.

The Vikings were also fifth in the girls 400 relay in 53.7.

Fremont's Austin Sadella had a big day for the Firebirds at the Frosh-Soph Classic. He was seventh in the 3,200 meters in 10:32.1 and ninth in the 1,600 in 4:52.2.

Matt Barkley of Fremont heaved the shot put 40-1 12 for a 14th-place finish.

Brian McDonough of Cupertino ran 4:54.1 to place 10th overall in the 1,600 meters.

    'Birds, Vikings win

Fremont won in boys competition and Lynbrook took the girls meet when four local teams locked up in SCVAL track action earlier this month.

The Firebirds outran Monta Vista, Lynbrook and Homestead in the boys competition, and the Vikings topped the other three squads in the girls division.

Jesse Huro and Mike Mattman each won a pair of events to lead the Fremont boys to a team win.

Huro raced to a first in the 880 in 2:11.95 and he also won the triple jump at 36-11, and Mattman took the weight events, winning the shot put at 50-2 and the discus at 131-4. Austin Sardella added a win in the 2-mile in 10:59.

Huro also teamed with Robert Cooper, Eric Fontes and Willie Grimes for a win in the mile relay in 3:44.75.

Hashmi and Chang each came through with victories for Monta Vista. Hashmi raced to a win in the 200 meters in 27.74 and also helped the Matadors to a win in the 400 relay in 46.37, and Chang soared to a win in the long jump at 17-10 1/2.

Lynbrook's Jeff Whitsett, Casey Courtney and Scott Rimmer each won events. Whitsett took the mile in 4:49.53, Courtney won the 400 in 54.26 and Rimmer was first in the high jump at 5-8.

Ben Versteger was a double winner for Homestead in the meet, taking the 110 high hurdles in 16.75 and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.94. Teammate Pat Rugo won the 100 in 11.93.

Twin winner Kim Gleeson led the Lynbrook girls to the win over Monta Vista, Fremont and Homestead. The weight star won the shot put at 39-9 1/2 and backed that up with a first in the discus at 118-9 1/2.

Lee, Lin, Kate Bossange and Shannon Hsieh supported Gleeson's effort with wins for the Vikings.

Lee won the 2-mile in 12:28.6, Lin took the 100 in 13.88, Bossange was tops in the 880 in 2:49.2 and Hsieh was first in the mile in 6:04.9.

Veronica Noone won twice for Monta Vista in the four-way meet. She took the high jump at 4-10 and the 100 high hurdles in 18.38.

Fong romped to a win in the 300 hurdles in 56.12 for the Mats and Monta Vista took the mile relay in 4:39.0.

Fremont's Jennifer Brown was a double winner in the meet. She took the 400 in 63.31 and the 200 in 28.63. She also helped Fremont to a win the 400 relay in 52.94. Teammate Thuyen Kim added a win in the triple jump at 32-3.
