Locals star in 20th running of CCS Top 8 meet

    By Dick Sparrer

Carl Montgomery can breathe another deep sigh of relief. The record Montgomery set in the 100 meters at the first Central Coast Section Top 8 Track Classic back in 1980 has survived yet another challenge.

Montgomery set the mark when he ran 10.4 in the first Top 8 meet, and though the record was tied by Tony Miller of Riordan in 1986, it had never been bettered heading into the 20th running of Top 8 Classic at Los Gatos last Friday night.

And once again Montgomery's mark withstands the test of time.

Not only was the boys 100-meter record not broken at the prestigious meet last Friday, it wasn't even threatened. And that was the case for almost all of the meet records as the CCS closes the books on the first 20 years of the Top 8 meet.

Still, even if the records were not falling, there were some outstanding performances when the best track and field athletes in the section got together at Los Gatos last week.

"There were a lot of state top 10 marks," admitted meet director, and Los Gatos coach, Willie Harmatz.

    Local stars

Kim Gleason of Lynbrook, Veronica Noone of Monta Vista and Kristen Kam of Fremont starred in the girls varsity division at the Top 8.

Gleason pushed the shot put a solid 35-9 to finish fourth in the event for the Vikings. Noone topped the high jump bar at 5-2 to tie for fourth for the Matadors, and Kam ran a quick 15.99 to finish fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles for the Firebirds.

In boys varsity action, Matt Hovik and Daniel Seddiqui of Homestead each placed in the distance events.

Hovik was fifth in the 3,200 meters in 9:42.7, and Seddiqui supported with a seventh in the 1,600 meters in 4:27.2.

Dan Shay heaved the shot put 54-7 for a Fremont victory in the event, with Mike Mattman a close second at 53.5. Mattman came back with a sixth in the discus at 122-5.
