Superintendent provides list of resources to help prevent violence

Editor's note--Superintendent Joe Hamilton mailed this letter to parents and students throughout the Fremont Union High School District following the shooting at Columbine High in Colorado. Included are the names and phone numbers of counselors at each high school.

We were stunned and saddened to hear the tragic news about the shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado. Like all of you, the Board of Trustees and District staff feel deeply for the Littleton community at this time of profound loss and grief.

We also want to assure you that schools in the Fremont Union High School District remain safe with few incidents of violence. We believe that this is due to a community with strong parent involvement in students' lives as well as the Board's proactive stance of "Zero Tolerance" for weapons or violent activities on the school campuses. Also contributing to safe campuses are collaborative efforts with local law enforcement and site-based programs which help students build a positive school community and learn effective conflict resolution skills.

There are trained support staff available on each campus, and we encourage parents and students to contact them if you have concerns. These include the licensed marriage and family counselors known as Student Advocates, Bay Area Family Therapy Training Associates (BAFTTA), Social Advocates for youth and other support resources.
