    Developers delay mall opening

A month after the City Council passed plans for the redevelopment of the downtown mall and put the approval process on a fast track, the project sponsor announced a six-month delay of its opening. The change shifts the anticipated opening from next fall to spring of 2000.

American Mall Properties, the owner of the mall, attributed the setbacks to construction and seismic retrofitting that must be completed before the demolition of the central parking structure at Mathilda and McKinley avenues. In its place will be a pedestrian mall lined with new retail stores and the 20-screen movie theater.

    Sunnyvale man dies in Placer

Early Tuesday morning, April 20, Placer County Jail personnel discovered Sunnyvale resident Robert Perron, 50, dead in his jail cell, after he had apparently hanged himself with a sheet.

A Placer County Sheriff's Department officer arrested and booked Perron into jail at 9:48 p.m. April 19 for suspected drunken driving. During a routine cell check at midnight, Perron appeared fine in his cell, according to detective Bill Langton, spokesman for the Placer County Sheriff's Department. A half-hour later, at 12:30 a.m., jail personnel discovered the apparent suicide, attempted CPR and called an ambulance. He was brought to the Tahoe Forest Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
