Citibank helps fund FUHSD conference
The Sunnyvale branch of Citibank presented the Fremont Union High School District with a $1,000 check last Wednesday, helping the district to get the ball rolling on a conference it will hold in 2000.
The 64th annual National Association of Student Councils conference will be held in the area June 24-28, 2000. About 1,500 students will visit Cupertino and Sunnyvale from as far away as Australia. Also, about 500 adult chaperones will accompany the students. The last time the conference was held in California was 1965.
The money will be used by the FUHSD to buy prizes and gifts for the delegates and their host families. On the district's "wish list" are CDs, computer diskettes, conference T-shirts and mouse pads with the conference logo.
Officer honored for most arrests
Sunnyvale Public Safety Officer Rick Stagner was honored last week by the Avoid the 13 and Avoid the 23 campaigns for arresting the largest numbers of drinking-driver suspects over the holidays.
Stagner, who made 30 arrests over the holiday season, is winning the "Deuce Stars" award for the second year in a row. Last year, he made 20 arrests. The award goes to the officer who made the most arrests in Santa Clara County.
The name of the award comes from a slang term police use to describe a drinking driver. It also comes from the California Vehicle Code's designation of the crime.
Closely following Stagner was Sunnyvale officer Tracy Hern, who made 24 arrests. The Avoid the 13 and Avoid the 23 campaigns are sponsored by the California Office of Traffic Safety and the county Police Chiefs Association.
Registrar of Voters needs Chinese speakers
The Registrar of Voters is in need of bilingual Chinese-English poll workers for the June 2 open primary election.
Grace Liu, the registrar's bilingual precinct technician, said she needs to find workers to staff up to 50 polling places in the Cupertino and Sunnyvale areas. She's seeking bilingual staff for 171 polls throughout the county. So far, Liu has secured fewer than 50 volunteers.
Workers will be paid $60 for working from 6:30 a.m. until 9 p.m. Applicants must be 18 years or older, live in Santa Clara County and be U.S. citizens.
Responsibilities include distributing ballots, directing voters to the right polling place and explaining to people how to use the voting equipment.
For more information, contact Liu at 299-8660.
