NOVA offers help to find summer jobs

The NOVA Private Industry Council wants to help youths find summer work and will pay them $5 an hour to learn needed skills.

Through a summer program offered by NOVA's Youth Employment Office at the Sunnyvale Town Center, youths can attend workshops, learn how to get involved in volunteer programs and get a part-time job. They also will earn school credits.

The program is geared for youths ages 14 to 21.

      Junior League honors two women

Two Sunnyvale women were honored for outstanding voluntarism at the 28th annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose on April 25.

As a volunteer for the Centre For Living with Dying, Carol Rannals provided support to people who lost loved ones.

She consoled both adults and children, helping the latter cope by using artwork, stories and puppets. She also trained volunteers.

Elizabeth Huen was recognized for her work at the Timpany Center in San Jose, which provides physical therapy and rehabilitation services to people with disabilities.

Huen helped organize the center's yearly craft fair and swimming program. She also has trained volunteers.

The luncheon, at which both women were honored, was sponsored by the Junior League of San Jose.

The Junior League is a nonprofit organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community with the help of trained volunteers.
