Six locals will pass the Olympic torch
Six local heroes will participate in the Olympic Torch relay as the flame makes its way through Sunnyvale on May 3.
Anyone who wishes can line El Camino Real or join the Chamber of Commerce and the city in welcoming the runners at the northwest corner of El Camino Real and Mathilda Avenue.
The Fremont High School and Homestead High School bands will perform as the torch passes by.
The Chamber of Commerce has flags available for people to wave during the relay.
Sunnyvale residents David Ahn, Sue Barbieri, Megan Daniels and Eugene Goldsmith will each have a turn carrying the torch. James Webb, an administrative assistant for Sunnyvale and former police officer Tony Maranon, will also serve as torchbearers for this event.
The torch will leave San Jose at 6 a.m. and will arrive at Lawrence Expressway at 7:25 a.m. and Mathilda Avenue at 7:55 a.m.
Council supports school measure
Both the Sunnyvale City Council and Chamber of Commerce have endorsed a $34 million bond issue for the Sunnyvale Elementary School District. The bond, which will be on the June 4 special election ballot, could only be used for improvement of school buildings or construction of new facilities.
Many of the elementary schools have unsafe playgrounds, run-down buildings and needs for more electrical outlets, said Board of Education President Linda Kilian.
