Fremont made a statement last week, and the Firebirds made it loud and clear with a rousing 12-1 victory over Homestead.
The Firebirds have every intention of winning the baseball title this spring in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Fremont nailed its 13th league win last week punctuated with an exclamation point. The Firebirds pounded out 15 hits on the road to a five-inning win over the Mustangs.
Fremont now holds a three-game lead over second-place Los Altos heading into the final two weeks of the regular season.
The Firebirds scored 12 runs in the first three innings, then left the rest up to talented right hander Troy Tulowitzski. The hurler tossed a two-hitter, giving up just a lone run in the fourth, on the way to the win. He pushed his mound record to 8-0.
Tulowitzski also led the 15-hit attack for the Firebirds with a double and three singles.
Pat Burgess struck the key blow of the game for the 'Birds when he blasted a home run. Burgess knocked in four runs in the game for Fremont.
Ron Cerda ripped three hits and knocked in two runs for the Firebirds, and Kyle Sevrens and Brandon Klein had two hits apiece and drove in two runs each. Tyler Duran had two hits and Vince Klumper doubled in the win.
Brian Maihack ripped a double for Homestead.
The Mustangs also lost a 10-6 decision to Palo Alto last week.
CCS Top-8 Classic
The Central Coast Section track and field championships are still nearly a month away.
But area track fans were allowed a little peak into the future when the best athletes in the section converged on the Los Gatos track on Friday night for the annual running of the CCS Top-8 Classic.
And Fremont's Mike Mattman and Thuyen Kim, Monta Vista's Dana Underwood and Lynbrook's Kim Gleason were all among the best of the best as they placed among the leaders in the prestigious event.
The CCS Top-8 meet, rained out on April 20, was rescheduled for last Friday night, and the best track and field athletes in the section turned out to compete under the lights and star-filled skies in Los Gatos.
All of the stars on Friday night weren't in the sky, though.
Lynbrook's Gleason finished among the stars with a first and a third for the Vikings. Gleason tossed the discus 133-5 for a first-place finish and heaved the shot put 38-11 1/2 third. The Lynbrook 1,600 relay later nailed an eighth in 4:22.3.
Monta Vista's Underwood and Fremont's Kim each finished fourth in their specialties at the Top-8. Underwood romped to a fourth in the 800 meters in 2:20.5 and Kim was fourth in the triple jump with a 34-2 1/4 effort.
Fremont's Jen Brown romped to a seventh in the 400 meters in 61.62.
Mattman heaved the shot put 53-2 1/2 to finish third in the event for Fremont, and Cupertino's Pat Parento hurled the discus 127-5 1/2 for an eighth.
In the boys CCS Top-8 frosh-soph division, Shariq Hashmi of Monta Vista raced to a second in the 200 meters in 23.61 and added a seventh in the 100 in 11.82.
Brian McDonough of Cupertino romped to a fifth in the 1,600 meters in 4:42.7, and Austin Sardella of Fremont was fifth in the 3,200 meters in 10:29.0.
Chris Deal of Lynbrook soared 38-10 1/2 to finish fifth in the triple jump and teammate Durell Roberts was eighth in the 200 in 24.50.
