Homestead won't win the championship in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League this spring.

But that doesn't mean that the Mustangs aren't champions.

They made sure of that by winning the title in the annual Cupertino Host Lions Tournament, beating rival Monta Vista 10-0 in the championship game.

David Attard tossed a two-hit shutout for the win over the Matadors, a win that came in five innings because of the 10-run rule.

The Mustangs staked Attard to a 2-0 lead with single runs in the second and third, then put the game away with back-to-back four-run rallies in the fourth and fifth.

Junior catcher Gary Mullins homered and singled to help Homestead to the title-clinching win. Chris Kidd had three hits to drive in three runs for the winners.

Brandon Schroder, Homestead's senior shortstop, tripled and singled in the game, and Robbie Hoffman had two hits to knock in three runs. Attard and Brandon Dougherty each doubled for the Mustangs.

Darryl Griffin doubled to account for one of Monta Vista's two hits in the game.

Homestead had earned a place in the championship game with a thrilling 13-12 win over Gilroy. The Mustangs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, scoring the game-winner with one out.

Dougherty doubled, tripled and homered to drive in four runs for the Mustangs, and Schroder had three hits. Attard ripped a pair of singles, Hoffman doubled, and Matt Whiteman knocked in two runs.

Israel Trujillo came on in relief to pick up the pitching win for Homestead.

Homestead split a couple of El Camino Division games last week. The Mustangs dropped a 6-1 nod to division-leading Gunn, but came back to crush Mountain View 14-2.

Chris Kidd singled and doubled for the Mustangs, and Adam Milliken ripped a double in the loss to Gunn.

Kidd belted three hits, and Doughtery doubled and tripled to lead the Mustangs to the win over the Spartans. Mullins added two hits, and Milliken and Whiteman each doubled.

Mullins, Milliken and Dougherty were the big run producers for the Mustangs, each one knocking in a pair of runs, and Anthony Torres was the winning pitcher, evening his record at 2-2.

    Firebirds fall

Fremont slipped to 3-10-1 in the De Anza Division with an 11-7 loss to Monta Vista and an 11-1 loss to Cupertino last week.

Scott Burgess crushed a three-run homer in the fourth, but it wasn't enough to keep the Firebirds from losing 11-7 to Monta Vista.

Pete Hernandez had a couple of singles for Fremont, and Ron Cerda singled and doubled. Chris Heng drove in a pair of runs for Fremont.

Fremont could manage just three hits in the 11-1 loss to Cupertino to open the week.

A week earlier, Fremont lost a 7-3 nod to Gunn in a nonleague game. Brandon Klein had two of Fremont's five hits in the loss.

    Lady Birds split

The Fremont girls softball team split a couple of games last week. The Lady Birds opened the week with a 7-3 win over Cupertino, but lost to division co-leader Lynbrook 13-2 later in the week.

The Firebirds are now 2-6 in the El Camino Division and 2-8 for the year.

Allison Ganz knocked in three runs with a couple of hits and Allegra Bajokwski had two hits to plate two runs to lead Fremont to the win over the Pioneers. Carolanne Fidler and Angela Abina also had two hits apiece for the winners.

Fremont scored a run in the third to take a slim 1-0 lead, but then broke the game open with four runs in the fourth.

The Lady Birds were touched for three-run rallies in the first and third in the loss to Lynbrook two days later.

The week before, Fremont lost a 7-3 nod to Palo Alto. Fidler tripled to lead a six-hit attack for the Firebirds.

    Mustangs top Gunn

Amelia Alexander tripled and knocked in three runs, and Danielle Bailey ripped a solo homer to lead the Homestead girls softball team to an 11-6 win over Gunn. Ashley Suth was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs.

Homestead scored single runs in each of the first three innings to stake Suth to a 3-1 lead, then unloaded for two in the fourth and six in the fifth to bury the Titans.

A week earlier, the Mustangs had fallen 9-7 to Lynbrook. Shawnti Bortoli doubled in the game for Homestead.

    Neufeld's no-no

Kathryn Neufeld tossed a no-hitter to lead the King's Academy girls softball team to an 11-0 win over Fremont Christian.

The junior ace struck out 15 and walked just one in the five-inning win. She pushed her pitching record to 12-3 for the year.

Neufeld also helped her cause at the plate with a couple of hits to knock in two runs for the Knights.

Hawley Menser singled and doubled to drive in two runs, and Kirsten Corstorphine belted a triple. Krista Lutz and Katie Henderson drove in two runs apiece.

The Knights improved to 13-3 with the win. They are 8-1 in the Private Schools League.
