VanDerveer to speak

Stanford University women's basketball coach Tara VanDerveer will be the guest speaker when the Silicon Valley Forum of the Commonwealth Club of California hosts a special program on May 19 at the Hilton Hotel in downtown San Jose.

VanDerveer's topic will be "Having a Clear Vision" as she discusses her role as the Stanford head coach, as well as her experiences as the head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.

The cost is $7 for members of the Commonwealth Club and $10 for nonmembers. The event will begin with a reception at 6 p.m. and the program to follow at 6:30 p.m. at the Hilton, 300 Almaden Blvd. For more information, call 1-800-847-7730.

Coaches needed

Fremont is looking for a number of coaches for the 1998-99 school year. The Firebirds need coaches for girls' field hockey, girls' volleyball and water polo. Anyone qualified and interested should apply at the Fremont Union High School District, 589 W. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale, and call Pat Lawson or Phil Kelly at 522-2431.

Football signups

The Cupertino-Sunnyvale Pop Warner football organization will hold signups for players ages 7-15 on May 16, 9 a.m.-noon, at Fair Oaks Park in Sunnyvale. For more information, call 737-9654.

Girls' basketball camps

A series of girls' basketball camps will be held at Santa Clara University this summer with sessions starting June 6 through July 31. For more information, call Shaunice Warr at 554-4567.

Sunnyvale AYSO

The Sunnyvale AYSO will hold soccer signups for the fall season for boys and girls ages 4 1/2-18 (born after July 31, 1980, and before Jan. 31, 1994).

Signups will be held May 13, 7-9 p.m., at the Lakewood Park Recreation Building; May 30, noon-5 p.m., at the Town Center Courtyard; and June 13, noon-5 p.m., at the Ponderosa Park Recreation Building.

Players must provide the following at registration: names of family doctor, health insurance company and emergency contact person; a passport-sized photo for player pass; and proof of age (for players who did not play last season).

The league is also looking for adult volunteers to serve as coaches and referees. Free classes will be provided.
