      Monta Vista junior heads to school board

      Mahmood Michael Ghaffary, a junior at Monta Vista High school, has been elected by the Intra-District Council to represent the more than 8,000 students in the district on the board of trustees for the 1997-98 school year.

      Ghaffary's interests include communication and politics, as supported by his extracurricular activities: Future Business Leaders of America, Mock Trial Competition, Junior Statesmen Association, and president and co-founder of the Persian Club. He also finds time to assist freshmen as a member of the Monta Vista Link Crew and is a member of the National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation.

      "I believe I can listen carefully to the students' opinions and represent the students to the board," Ghaffary said

      Interact elects Chen to district governor spot

      Homestead High School 11th-grader Karen Chen was elected governor by more than 500 Interact members at their Spring Awards Banquet on April 10. Chen will serve as governor of the Interact clubs in District 5170, which consists of 65 high school Interact service clubs, sponsored by Rotary International. Her duties will include heading the student council, which oversees the service clubs, and presiding over the annual Leadership Conference and Awards Ceremony.

      Local students honored in journalism contest

      Five students from the Fremont Union High School District received prizes and certificates of merit for their entries in the 43rd Annual Invest-In-America Economic Discussion and 35th Annual Journalism Competition at a luncheon at the San Jose Hyatt Hotel on April 23.

      Lynbrook High School freshman Soumeya Bendimerad won one share of Bank of America stock in the Economic Discussion program. Starlayne Meza, a Fremont High School senior, was awarded the Overall Grand Prize of $150 in the Journalism Competition for her article "Faxing, Double-clicking and Downloading Your Way Through Life." $75 prizes in the Journalism Competition were awarded to Ryan Scott, Fremont High School junior; Alexandra Dusa, a Lynbrook High School senior; and Nancy Nan-chun Lai, a senior at Monta Vista High School. The prestigious PIBA Plaque, awarded to the school whose journalism entries demonstrated the best understanding of the subject, was awarded to the Monta Vista High School journalism staff and was accepted by adviser Terry Cress.

      Lynbrook High hosts computer giveaway

      Lynbrook High School will host the Detwiler Foundation Computers for Schools Program computer distribution event on May 6, 1997. Gail Wilson, Gov. Pete Wilson's wife, will be the keynote speaker at the event, which will be attended by electronic industry representatives and education leaders.

      Homestead teacher named speech fellow

      Homestead High School English teacher and drama coach Shareen Clarke has been selected as a Northwestern University School of Speech Summer Fellow. Clarke will join a long list of distinguished secondary teachers who have participated in this program over the past 19 years. The program operates over a six-week period, June 23 through Aug. 2.

      Wong wins Tandy tech scholar award

      Homestead High School Science Teacher Gareth Wong was recently selected as a winner in the Tandy Technology Scholars Program, a national competition in which the top 100 math, science and computer science teachers in a pool of about 700 applicants are awarded $2,500. In addition, the program purchased advertisement space in TIME magazine and all winners were pictured in the March 31, 1997 issue. Wong was nominated by parents of two former students.
