A Sunnyvale man is recovering from stab wounds to the chest and back after a Washington State man allegedly attacked him and injured his two children at an apartment at 659 E. Olive Ave. April 28.
James Armstrong, 40, was in fair condition at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, according to Sunnyvale Public Safety Capt. Steve Pigott.
Armstrong's 2-year-old son was treated for a fractured skull and was released on that day. Armstrong's 6-month-old son suffered minor injuries and was released May 1.
Police arrested the suspect, Curtis Fountilla, 30, and charged him with attempted murder and carjacking. He was arraigned on those charges at the Sunnyvale Municipal Court April 30.
Pigott said police officers responding found Armstrong outside the apartment with injuries. Officers also found his children with head wounds they sustained from falling down a staircase, Pigott said.
A few minutes after the stabbing, police responded to a carjacking on Old San Francisco Road, half a mile from the Armstrong home.
The carjacking suspect, whose description matched that of the stabbing suspect, crashed the car into a wall of a building at 2559 El Camino Real, police said.
He then ran to the Granada Motel, where he temporarily barricaded himself in a vacant room before he was arrested, Pigott said.
Police are trying to determine a motive for the stabbing. Pigott said Armstrong and Fountilla were acquaintances.
