Sunnyvale's Carol Chang, 11, will compete in the regional gymnastics tournament in Las Vegas.
Sunnyvale's Chang wins spot in gym regionals
By Dick Sparrer
Carol Chang is headed to Vegas.
But there won't be any blackjack or poker for this Sunnyvale resident. Heck, she won't even drop a quarter in a slot machine.
Because Chang's only 11 years old, and she's not going to Las Vegas to gamble ... she's heading there to compete in the regional gymnastics tournament as a member of the Northern California team.
Chang won her place on the squad by finishing second in the all-around competition at the Northern California Level 9 championships held recently in San Jose.
The Sunnyvale girl, a fifth-grader at West School in Sunnyvale, finished first in the floor exercise, second on the balance beam and third on the uneven bars to clinch second place overall.
Chang, who started her gymnastics training as a 4-year-old, is a well-rounded girl who is a GATE (Gifted And Talented Education) student at West Valley and sings in the choir at First Baptist Church in Sunnyvale.
She spends 27 hours a week training at the Airborne Gymnastics National Training Center in Santa Clara and hopes to become an elite gymnast.
Right now, though, her goal is to hit the jackpot in Las Vegas.
