After a tough loss, it's nice to get a win.
And wins don't come any nicer than the one the Fremont girls' softball team recorded last week against Mountain View.
The Indians had just dropped a 7-6 heartbreaker to Wilcox earlier in the week and were going up against powerhouse Mountain View a few days later.
The Spartans were 7-2, and trailed only Los Altos in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. The Indians were back a few more games in the standings, sitting two games under .500
But the Indians were not to be denied against the Spartans--pitcher Jessica Pullano saw to that.
The Indians scored a run in the top of the first, and Pullano made it stand up for a 1-0 Fremont victory. She tossed a one-hit shutout to lead her club to the impressive victory.
Fremont improved to 4-5 in the division and to 10-11 for the year with the win.
Earlier in the week, the Indians had dropped a tough 7-6 nod to Wilcox.
Shawna Niday tripled and singled twice and Samantha Hess singled and tripled, but the Indians still came up short. Shannon Ryan singled and doubled, Pullano had two hits and Brandi Robriguez tripled in the game.
Golfers lose two
Junior Mike Stahmer fired a 46, but the Fremont golf team couldn't keep pace with Saratoga in Santa Clara Valley Athletic League play at the Saratoga Country Club last week.
The Falcons were tough on their home course, cruising to a 210-275 victory.
Stahmer led the Fremont effort with his 46. Chris Brierton finished with a 53, Sean Blaschke shot a 56, Mike Benkoski carded a 58 and Brendon Bartholomew finished at 62.
Benkoski, Stahmer and Brierton were all within two strokes on each other, but Fremont lost a tough 208-225 decision to Los Gatos at Sunnyvale Muni.
Benkoski fired a team-leading 41. Stahmer was close behind with a 42 and Brierton was a stroke back at 43. Bartholomew finished with a 47 and Blaschke carded a 52.
Indians in semi's
The doubles team of Daniel Schuet and Brian Nguyen made it to the semifinals of the El Camino Division tennis tournament before losing to a team from Gunn 6-2, 6-0.
