As athletes, they mastered the sport of competitive swimming.
Now, as masters, they'll be back in the water once again when the 1996 United States Masters Swimming National Short Course championships come to De Anza Community College in Cupertino.
De Anza Cupertino Aquatics will co-host the four-day event, along with the city of Cupertino and De Anza College. Swimming competition will run May 9-12 at the De Anza Aquatic Center.
Past world record holders, Olympic medalists and collegiate champions are expected to be in the field, that will feature an appearance by swimming legend James "Doc" Counsilman.
Counsilman recently retired after serving more than 30 years as the Indiana University men's swimming coach. Many of his former athletes will compete in the masters' meet as members of "Team Doc," and Counsilman himself will also be in the water.
In all, more than 2,000 swimmers, ages 19 and up, will take part in the masters' meet.
