State of the City held on May 12
The city of Sunnyvale will hold the State of the City 2001, Barbecue and Family Fun Festival on May 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 East Remington Drive. This year's theme is "Building Community: Past, Present, and Future." The event will include the mayor's State of the City address, community awards and the dedication of Orchard Park Interpretive Exhibit from 1 to 2:15 p.m. There will be hay wagon rides, face painting, old-fashioned ice cream making, music, antique cars, electric vehicle rides, photos with historical figures and more. The entire community is invited to attend this free event. (Barbecue items will be sold at cost.) For additional information, call 408.730.7535.
Volunteer Awards
The city of Sunnyvale recognized its volunteers at a ceremony May 1 in honor of the 28th annual National Volunteer Week. Among those awarded were Jim Beavers, John Edward, Donna Molnar and Larry Corina for their commitment to science and technology, as well as high school students Julie Chan and Claudia Van Cleemput for volunteer efforts with youths. Fred Goodfellow was recognized for his work as an online job search coach, and Lai Webster for her work at the senior center. Finally, the Outstanding Volunteer Supervisor Award went to Jean Rentschler for her work as the senior center's trip coordinator.
NOVA Youth Job Fair
The NOVA Youth Employment is holding its fifth annual summer job fair at the Sunnyvale Town Center Mall on May 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. The fair will take place in the youth office on the second floor. Food and entertainment will be provided at no charge. For information, call 408.522.9845.
Energy Symposium
The Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce will hosts Wake up Sunnyvale at the Radisson Inn on May 10, from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Representatives from PG&E, city of Sunnyvale Public Safety Department, Synopsys Inc. and others will present information, tips and ideas to help develop a plan of action for dealing with the energy crisis. The symposium is free.
OPHIE Dedication May 12
After 10 years of planning, fundraising, and hard work, the Orchard Heritage Park Interpretive Exhibit will be completed. The 10 acres of Charlie Olson's orchard, preserved by the city, will have an outdoor museum depicting the history of the fruit industry in the Santa Clara Valley. Pictorial descriptions of the process and an honor roll of more than 500 orchardists are part of the exhibit. The dedication is held in conjunction with the State of the City address.
