Speak Out
From the Publisher
The "At Work" section of the San Francisco Chronicle is being included with some issues of The Sun as a paid insert. We frequently contract with businesses to insert their advertising and other messages into our papers. As with other inserts, we are not involved, in any way, with the production of the "At Work" section. Copies are delivered to us, and we deliver them with our papers.

Marquee is ugly, wasteful
Last week, in the front of the John Muir Elementary School in the Cupertino Union High School District, the school administration erected a marquee. It's unattractive, expensive, and out of place on our quiet, neighborhood block. Certainly the Cupertino Union School District has many services needed for their children which could have been serviced with the money they squandered on this eyesore. Has the CUSD achieved reduced class size in all their classrooms, extended extra services needed to all minority students and students with special needs, made technology available to all their students, subsidized housing for all their teachers, offered continued training for their teachers, supplied all textbooks and other classroom necessities for all students and teachers? If so, then they must make their secret of success known to all the other school districts that are struggling to achieve a modicum of success with these issues. If not, then they should not have squandered these thousands of dollars on a marquee, but spent it wisely on the needs of their students and teachers.
