    Mustangs, Knights head to CCS playoffs

    The Central Coast Section volleyball playoffs begin this week, and the Homestead and King's Academy boys teams will be in the middle of the action.

    The Mustangs, 16-6 for the year after a perfect 8-0 finish in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, will open the playoffs at home when they host Monterey (14-11) on May 10, 7 p.m. The winner advances to the quarter-final round on May 12, 1 p.m., at Santa Clara High School against the Redwood Christian (20-10)-San Lorenzo Valley (27-4) first-round winner.

    Homestead is coming off of an easy 15-13, 15-0, 15-0 win over Fremont. Junior outside hitter Armen Ekmekji sparked the Mustangs to the win with 14 kills.

    The Mustangs knocked off Los Gatos in a hard-earned 15-12, 10-15, 15-13, 15-7 match to remain unbeaten. Junior outside hitter Josh Cavin led Homestead with an impressive 24 kills.

    The King's Academy also won a CCS playoff berth. The Knights finished 10-2 in the Private Schools League and are 16-8 for the year.

    King's will open the playoffs at Serra (18-13) on May 10, 7 p.m., with the winner facing the Los Gatos (19-9)-Mitty (20-6) first-round winner on May 12, 3 p.m., at Santa Clara.

    King's ran its league record to 10-2 with a 15-5, 15-7, 7-15, 16-14 win over St. Lawrence Academy last week. King's had beaten Woodside Priory 15-7, 5-15, 15-6, 15-7 match earlier.

    Prior to the loss to Homestead, Fremont had posted a couple of league wins over Mountain View.

    Sophomore outside hitter Lance Lesui buried 15 kills to lead the Firebirds to a 10-15, 15-9, 15-10, 15-9 win over the Spartans. Earlier, Lesui had pounded in 26 kills in a tough 15-11, 7-15, 15-12, 13-15, 15-11 win over Mountain View.
