    Wedemeyer scholarships

    The second annual Charlie Wedemeyer Scholarship Awards Dinner will be held on May 17, 6 p.m., at the Fairmont Hotel in San Jose, and six deserving athletes will receive $5,000 scholarships.

    All of the winning athletes have overcome some sort of adversity in life, and all have given to their communities.

    Local sports celebrities expected for the awards ceremony include Ronnie Lott, Brent Jones, Peggy Fleming and Chuck Muncie. All money raised from the dinner will support Charlie Wedemeyer Family Outreach, which reaches out to individuals and families coping with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease).

    Impact tryouts

    The De Anza Impact, a girls under-11 Class 1 soccer team, is holding tryouts for the fall season. Players born after July 31, 1989, are eligible. The team is coached by Nicole Leonard, a former Santa Clara University goalie. For more information, call the coach at 408.985.9992, or call team manager Laura Watkins at 408.399.9190.

    Sunnyvale AYSO

    The Sunnyvale AYSO soccer program will hold signups for players ages 4 1/2-18 (by July 31, 2000) for the fall season.
