    Mats win girls track title

    Fremont boys second at finals

    By DICK SPARRER

Monta Vista's Kirk Mansfield and Homestead's Jeff Payne made similar predictions when the track and field season began this spring.

Mansfield expected his Monta Vista girls to win a title in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, and Payne figured his boys would win the crown in the same division.

And when the season came to a close last week, one prediction turned out to be right... and the other didn't.

The Monta Vista girls clinched the title in the El Camino Division with an 86-40 victory over Santa Clara in the final dual-meet of the season. The Matadors had finished second at the league meet a night earlier.

But Homestead missed in its bid to claim the boys title in the division. Santa Clara turned that track, wrapping up a 6-0 dual meet season with a 100-26 victory over Monta Vista last week.

Homestead ended up at the bottom of the pack when the division teams got together for the league meet last Wednesday. Wilcox and Santa Clara tied for the team title at the finals with Fremont third, Monta Vista fourth, Lynbrook and Mountain View fifth and Homestead seventh.

In the girls league meet, Wilcox was first with Monta Vista second, Mountain View third, Lynbrook fourth, Santa Clara fifth, Fremont sixth and Homestead seventh.

Veronica Noone starred for the Matadors last week, leading their effort at the league meet and sparking them to the win over Santa Clara to clinch the dual-meet title.

Noone was second in the high jump at 5-0 and third in both the 300 hurdles in 50.85 and the 100 hurdles in 17.66 to lead the Monta Vista effort in the league meet at Foothill last week.

Anna Abatzoglou was a league champion in the discus with a toss of 116-3 for the Matadors.

Lauren Adams was second in the mile in 5:48.3, Andrea Sturzu was second in the shot put at 30-11 1/2, Diana Chien was second in the long jump at 16-9 3/4 and Sarah Blake-Burke was third in the 3,200 meters in 13:14.7.

    Mats dual champs

Noone was a triple winner and Blake-Burke won two events to help the Matadors to the dual-meet victory over Santa Clara that capped their perfect El Camino season.

Noone took the high jump at 5-2, the 100 hurdles in 17.8 and the 300 hurdles in 66.4, and Blake-Burke was first in both the mile in 6:22 and the two-mile in 14:54.

Abatzoglou tossed the discus 105-8 for a Monta Vista first, and Allison Thee took the 400 in 65.5. Jamie Stager was first in the 100 in 13.6, Jennifer Stack won the 200 in 30.2, Helen Hui took the spot put at 29-2 1/2 and Audrey Tom soared to a win in the triple jump at 32-3 1/2.

The Monta Vista boys lost 100-26 to the Bruins the same day as Santa Clara wrapped up a 6-0 year. Garrett Ince, Colin Yamaoka and Paul Sapudar were the only winners for the Matadors.

Ince took the 110 hurdles in 16.7, Yamaoka won the 300 hurdles in 46.8 and Sapudar was tops in the long jump at 19-7 1/2.

Ince and Yamaoka both placed for the Matadors at the league meet last week. Yamaoka was second in the 300 hurdles in 42.70, and Ince was third in both the 300 hurdles in 43.64 and the 110 hurdles in 16.89.

Kevin Coolidge soared to a second in the high jump at 6-0 for the Mats. Sapudar was third in the long jump at 19-10, and David Worthan was third in the 400 in 52.56.

    Fremont second

Seamus Quillinan placed in a pair of events and Mike Mattman and Dan Shay placed in the weights to lead the Fremont boys to a team second at the finals.

Quillinan was a league champion in the 300 hurdles in 41.27, and he added a second in the 110 highs in 16.29 to star for the Firebirds in the meet.

Mattman came through with a second in the discus with a toss of 129-11, and Shay supported with a third in the shot with a heave of 48-11.

Shawntee Lopez flew to a league title in the high jump for the Firebirds at 6-0, and Doug Huro was third in the mile in 4:44.8.

In the girls division, Jennifer Brown ran to a win and Kristen Kam placed in three events to help the Firebirds to a team sixth.

Brown was first in the 400 meters in 59.80 and she added a third in the 200 in 26.71 to star for Fremont.

Kam was second in both the 300 hurdles in 47.49 and the 100 hurdles in 16.78, and she was third in the triple jump at 33-3 1/2. Sueh Han Lieu supported with a second in the 3,200 meters in 13:09.7.

    Gleason wins

Lynbrook's Kim Gleason heaved the shot put 31-10 for a victory to lead the Vikings to a fourth-place finish in the team standings at the league finals.

Gleason added a second in the discus with a toss of 109-10.

Lynbrook's Barret Bryson placed in two events to help the Vikings tie for fourth in the boys division. Bryson was a champ in the triple jump at 41-5 1/2, and he added a second in the long jump at 20-2 1/4.

    Seddiqui, Hovik star

Daniel Seddiqui and Matt Hovik each starred for the Homestead boys at the league meet.

Seddiqui, a junior distance star for the Mustangs, was second in the mile in 4:35.9 and third in the 800 in 2:05.4. Hovik, a senior standout at Homestead, was second in the two-mile in 10:10.2.

Freshman Richard Barries raced to a second in the 400 meters in 52.30, and senior Kwasi Graves was third in the discus at 123-6 1/4.

The Homestead boys, though, finished up at the bottom of the pack in the team standings at the finals. And so did the Homestead girls, despite an individual win by junior distance star Rachael Fredrickson.

Fredrickson was first in the 3,200 meters in 12:52.9.

    Pioneers fifth

Jimmy Dickerson and Marcus Keller each placed second in the hurdle events for Cupertino in the De Anza Division finals held last Thursday evening at Los Gatos.

Dickerson topped the 110 high hurdles in 15.56 to finish second, and Keller was second in the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.15.

The Pioneers came through with a two-three-four finish in the triple jump at the De Anza Division finals. Scott Lynch was second at 41-9, with Keller third at 41-2 3/4 and Mike Ter-Zakharaints fourth at 40-7.

Lynch was also second in the long jump at 20-1 1/2 for Cupertino, with teammate Joey Anderson third at 19-11 3/4.

The Cupertino boys ended up fifth in the team standings at the finals, but the girls finished last in the division.
