Sunnyvale reviews public art policy
The Sunnyvale City Council voted 6 to 1 to adopt the staff-recommended policy of charging private developers a fee of 1 percent of their development cost, to be used for public art on the site. The Sunnyvale Planning Commission and the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce studied the issue and made recommendations before the council voted on it.
Suzi Blackman, president and CEO of the Chamber of Commerce suggested that the council reduce that rate to one-half percent.
"The staff's recommendation of one percent is too high," she said.
Blackman also suggested that the council impose a cap on the art at $500,000.
Councilman Tim Risch agreed, and made a motion to reduce the fee to one-half percent, but his motion failed.
"Let's keep it at 1 percent, "Sunnyvale resident Jeff Jones said. "The art is for the citizens."
Vice Mayor Julia Miller cast the dissenting vote on the motion, saying that she did not like the property tax implications.
