Perfect season
The Fremont girls junior varsity softball team wrapped up a perfect league season, posting a 12-0 record in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
It took a remarkable come-from-behind victory over Saratoga in the final week of the season for the Firebirds to secure that undefeated season, though.
Fremont trailed the Falcons 9-0 after an inning in the second to last game of the year. But the Firebirds chipped away to tie the game by the seventh inning, then won it in the ninth.
Each team scored in the eighth inning, but Ashley Spelman's two-run single in the ninth lifted the Firebirds to the thrilling comeback victory.
The team was led this spring by co-captains Carolyn Chin and Vanessa Lovelace. Nichole Mercado topped the squad with three home runs, and Clara Lopez was the team's top pitcher. Lovelace belted three triples and three doubles and shared time at catcher with Stephanie Hayes.
Rounding out the squad were Melissa Gavron, Shelly Horne, Meagan Larks, Aimee Manzano, Dinah Nicolas and Christina Pheffer.
"This year's softball team was filled with highly talented players," said assistant coach Nelda Garcia. "Every player is unique and has worked together to win."
The club's manager was Abel Garcia, a veteran coach who spent 10 years coaching softball in the Sunnyvale National Little League before and coached at Homestead before moving over to Fremont in 1997.
Jim Geary and N. Garcia were assistant coaches on the Fremont staff.
