Homestead is playing very good baseball this spring.
So is Monta Vista.
And if the two Santa Clara Valley Athletic League clubs play well enough May 16, they will be playing that good baseball against each other in the Central Coast Section Division I quarterfinals at 7 p.m. Saturday at San Jose's PAL Stadium.
Homestead advanced to the CCS playoffs as the champion of the El Camino Division, and Monta Vista moved into postseason play after finishing an impressive second in the rugged De Anza Division.
Monta Vista, 20-6 for the year, is seeded No. 2 in the tourney, second only to De Anza Division champion Wilcox. The Matadors will open the CCS playoffs May 16, 3 p.m., against Leigh (10-12) at San José City College.
Homestead, 20-5 for the year, will meet Mitty (21-7) at Washington Park on May 16, 4:30 p.m.
The winners of the two games will collide on Saturday at PAL Stadium.
Homestead wrapped up the regular season with a solid 8-3 win over Lynbrook. The win left the Mustangs 17-1 in the El Camino Division, and the loss dropped the Vikings to 8-10.
Ben Amiwero and Gabe Interiano each singled and doubled to knock in two runs apiece for the Mustangs in the victory. Mike Jones tripled home two runs and Bret Erickson slapped a double.
Alex Turlea was the winning pitcher for Homestead, stretching his season record to 5-0.
Indians lose three
Tom Jimenez homered, but Fremont finished the year suffering a 9-1 loss to Los Gatos.
It was the second loss of the week for the Indians, who were blanked 5-0 by Palo Alto a couple of days earlier and fell 5-2 to Milpitas to open the week.
Jimenez ripped a homer and singled, and Danny Cerda cracked a double, but Fremont dropped a 9-1 decision to Gatos to finish the season.
Fremont jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first, but the Cats matched that run in the home half of the frame then rallied for three in the third and five in the fourth.
The Indians ended the year 6-12 in the De Anza Division and 9-13 for the year.
Brent McCann fired a 6-hitter, but Fremont dropped a 5-0 decision to Palo Alto earlier in the week.
Fremont had opened the week by dropping a 5-2 decision to Milpitas. Nick DiQuisto had two hits for the Indians and Jimenez belted a double. Nick Duran was tagged with the tough mound loss.
The Indians jumped in front 2-0 in the first and held that lead until Milpitas tied it with single runs in the fourth and fifth. The Trojans went in front with two in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh.
King's wins title
The King's Academy baseball team split last week, but still managed to win the title in the Christian Private Schools League.
Danny Carter had three hits, but King's lost a 7-5 decision to St. Lawrence Academy.
Carter tripled home a couple of runs and was the winning pitcher for the Knights in a 14-5 victory over Mid Peninsula. Micah Bariteau singled and tripled to drive in two runs.
King's, 9-1 in league play and 11-8 for the year, will advance to the CCS Division II playoffs this week. The Knights are seeded No. 16 and will face No. 1 seeded Monterey (21-9) on May 15, 7 p.m., at Sollecito Park in Monterey.
