Naivalu runs to pair of wins in hurdles

By DICK SPARRER

Joe Naivalu wants to qualify for the state track and field championships in three events.

And if last week's performance is any indication, the Fremont sensation is on the right track.

Naivalu came through with a pair of firsts and a second at the Central Coast Section North Regionals at Los Gatos.

The Fremont senior won both of his specialties, the 110-meter high hurdles and the 300-meter intermediate hurdles, and he was second in the 100-meter dash.

Naivalu is the defending state champion in the 110 highs, and he easily won the event at the CCS qualifying meet in 14.01. He added another easy win in the 300 intermediates in 37.64.

The Fremont star was also second in the 100 in 10.95.

Naivalu had won all three events at the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division finals a week earlier. He took the 110 high hurdles in 14.51 and the 100 in 11.29, and he also won the 300 intermediates.

Naivalu will move on to the CCS trials May 18 at San José City College hoping to qualify in each of the three events for the May 23 finals on the same track.

The state meet is set for May 31 and June 1 in Cerritos, and Naivalu has hopes of running all three events there.

Homestead's Mary Lucido and Sutter Wehmeier also qualified for the CCS trials with solid performances at Los Gatos last weekend.

Lucido, just a freshman, finished second in the 3,200 meters in 11:32.57 to move on to the CCS trials.

Wehmeier qualified for CCS in two events. The Homestead sophomore was fourth in the triple jump at 42-6 1/2 and he added a sixth in the long jump at 20-7.
