Police Þnd man, 57, dead under truck
A Sunnyvale man died in a May 4 traffic accident that left him pinned under the left front wheel of his one-ton Dodge truck, Santa Clara police said.
Police and fire officials found Donald Martin Thompson, 57, beneath his vehicle on westbound Central Expressway, east of Coronado Drive, at about 9:37 p.m. Thompson had apparently pulled to the side of the road to inspect his vehicle, police said.
Although Thompson's death appears to be accidental, police are investigating the incident.
Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Santa Clara police at 261-5300.
Bright idea reduces city's utility bill
City staff and contractors were busy during the past year upgrading or re-configuring 4,240 light fixtures and replacing more than 11,000 light bulbs at 31 city facilities. The changes in City Hall, the library, the Community Center and other buildings will help the city lower its electric bill.
At the May 7 City Council meeting, Mayor Robin Parker said that the city has reduced energy consumption by 6 percent at these sites, which means an annual savings of about $50,000.
Frank Arroyo of Pacific Gas & Electric Co. gave Sunnyvale a rebate check for $59,280 as part of a conservation program.
"The lighting has improved and the city is saving energy and money," Arroyo said. It also puts fewer pollutants in the air, he said.
