    New HR director appointed to city

    Mark Gregersen has been appointed the new director of human resources for the city of Sunnyvale. Gregersen has more than 20 years of public sector experience, including positions as the director of human resources for the cities of Reno and Vallejo. "Sunnyvale has a great reputation for excellence in public service. "I am very anxious to begin the duties of my new position, and I look forward to meeting and working with the employees of Sunnyvale, as well," Gregersen said. As human resources director, Gregersen will be responsible for all aspects of employee services, including recruitment, training, risk management and insurance, labor relations and employee recognition. Gregersen will start work on June 11.

    NOVA youth job fair on May 16

    Teens looking for gainful employment can check out the NOVA Youth Employment's Office's annual Youth Job Fair on May 16, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the NOVA Youth Employment Office on the second floor of the Silicon Valley WAVE (formerly the Sunnyvale Town Center Mall). Curious job-seekers should go first to the Youth Office to receive a list of participating WAVE stores, then talk with the many local business representatives on hand, to discuss their companies. NOVA is a seven-city employment training consortium administered by the city of Sunnyvale.

    The Youth Employment Office offers free job placement and referral services, as well as job readiness counseling. For more information, call the office at 408.522.9845, or simply come in to register.

    Sunnyvale celebrates 'Bike-To-Work Day'

    The city of Sunnyvale is celebrating "Bike-To-Work Day" with a kickoff ride on May 17. The ride will include members of the city council, boards and commissions and public safety officers. The ride begins at the energizer station at the Caltrain station at 7:30 a.m. and ends at city hall.

    The ride will turn left on Evelyn Avenue, turn right onto Sunnyvale Avenue, then continue down Sunnyvale and make a right onto Olive Avenue. There will be three energizer stations at the Sunnyvale Caltrain station, the corner of Mary and Maude in front of Trimble Navigation and the intersection of Wolfe Road and El Camino Real.

    County memorial service to be held on May 18

    In recognition of Peace Officers' Memorial Week May 13-19, there will be a county memorial service on May 18, at noon. The service will honor those peace officers in Santa Clara County who have given their lives in the line of duty.

    The service will be held at the Santa Clara County Peace Officers' Memorial, in front of the sheriff's office at 55 W. Younger Ave. in San Jose.

    Celebrating Older Americans Month

    May is Older Americans Month, and the Sunnyvale Senior Center, sponsored by the city of Sunnyvale Parks and Recreation Department, will host a variety of events throughout the month. An Older Americans Month dance will be held on May 23, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Senior Center, Room 601. For more information about these and other events, call 408.730.7360.

    Sunnyvale Music School Spring Performance

    Approximately 150 student performers from The Music School will present On Broadway, on May 19, at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. and on May 20, at 3 p.m. in the gym of the Presbyterian Church of Sunnyvale, 728 W. Fremont Ave.

    The children's musical will feature songs from Annie, The Music Man, Sound of Music, Oklahoma and more. Ticket donation is $8 for individuals or $20 per family. Tickets can be reserved by calling The Music School at 408.739.9248.

    Hands on the Arts in Sunnyvale held on May 19

    Children from kindergarten through eighth grade are welcome to participate in the workshops at the 16th annual Hands on the Arts on May 19, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Drive. The arts and crafts workshops are $4 per child, with a maximum cost of $12 per family. The festival is free and open to the public. Multicultural food booths and live entertainment will also be a part of the event. For more information, call 408.730.7350.
