Marquee is a symbol of school pride

The marquee erected at John Muir Elementary, like those at many other schools, was paid for by the PTA through donations from families at our schools. District funds were not used to purchase the marquee. PTA budgets are discussed and approved at meetings open to the public. Our parents and teachers supported the installation of the marquee as an inexpensive method of informing our student body and their families of PTA and school events. Rather than having to distribute flyers or tape posters to our school walls to inform parents, students, and teachers, we can post our events on the marquee, thus saving PTA costs of paper and photocopying. The marquee will also be a more effective method of consistently keeping John Muir families and our community informed of its events. John Muir parents feel increased awareness of school events will result in increased participation, which results in a better community.

CUSD selected the style of our marquee to promote school pride, and we are proud of CUSD for addressing this issue. Our marquee uses our wildcat mascot and John Muir colors. When students see the marquee, they can be proud of John Muir and what it symbolizes. We are a neighborhood school and families of John Muir live in this "quiet" neighborhood, including the front of the school where the marquee is placed for maximum visibility.

If Ms. Pines wants to help with the funding for CUSD, she should look into the state-level funding that Cupertino receives. CUSD is the lowest funded district in Santa Clara County and one of the lowest funded in the state. One of our functions, as stated in the mission statement, is "to encourage parent and public involvement in the public schools of this nation." PTA's fundraising is used for this goal in areas determined by our membership. Our PTA made the decision to fund the marquee to help promote such involvement. Our marquee was a small price to pay for promoting school awareness and school pride. Our marquee has been well thought out by John Muir parents, with technical assistance from the district and we are proud to be a neighborhood CUSD school.
