    Puppy and kitten chow drive

    The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley furry guests literally eat them out of house and home. The shelter is conducting a Puppy and Kitten Chow drive this month. Donations of canned wet food, kibble and puppy and kitten milk would be greatly appreciated. Donations can be brought to the shelter, located at 2530 Lafayette Street in Santa Clara.

    The Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley is the largest animal shelter on the West Coast. They are a non-profit agency and do not receive funding from any national humane organizations.

    De Anza College student newspaper wins honors

    The staff of La Voz, the student newspaper of De Anza College, took three awards for their work in 1999 on one award for on-the-spot competition at the Journalism Association of Community Colleges conference in Fresno on April 14 and 15.

    La Voz Editor-in-Chief Chris Pommier took third place in an on-the-spot competition for Headline Writing. Photo Editor Kelley Abel received a medal for her performance as part of a team competing in a game-show style quiz.

    Photographer Nelson Ching won fourth place in the Sports News Photo category. Staff Writer Anthony Choice received an honorable mention for Informational Graphic design and Staff Writer Dean Carrico received an honorable mention for Critical Review.

    Recreation Department offers new teen camps

    The Saratoga Recreation Department this summer will offer three new camps for teens throughout the region. The camps are geared toward teens who may have outgrown traditional camps. The following camps are for teens entering sixth through ninth grade this fall:

    The Extreme Adventure camp, a three-week camp, include trips to places like Paramount's Great America, the Santa Cruz beach and boardwalk or a San Francisco Giants baseball game. The fee for five days is $194 for Saratoga residents, $159 for non-residents.

    Cool Ventures, a camp offered for four weeks, features two days of trips to the above mentioned locations. Campers spend the other three weekdays doing sports, arts, crafts, games and cooking. The fee for five days is $149 for Saratoga residents, $159 for non-residents.

    Camp fees include entrance fees, transportation, supervision, craft materials and some snacks. Campers must bring a lunch each day and wear sunscreen and tennis shoes. These camps met at the Warner Hutton House in Saratoga.

    A third camp, scheduled to run July 17 through July 21, is the Adventure Trail, geared toward teens age 11-17. The camp features a week of High Sierra backpacking with naturalist Greg Meyer and teen coordinator Greg Milano. Campers spend the first day of the camp at El Quito Park in Saratoga, learning to pack backpacks and planning menus. They then spend the next four days and three nights in the Sierras.

    Campers will be supplied an equipment list with rental information and a detailed itinerary prior to the camp. The fee for the camp is $189 for residents, $199 for non-residents.

    Dance program presented

    Chance to Dance is a summer dance program for children ages 7-10 in which the visual arts act as a stimulus for creative movement and expose kids to a variety of dance. Styles of dance include forms of swing, folk and ethnic dances, theater routines, hip hop and more. The summer program runs June 20-22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dance Spectrum, 1707 S. Bascom Ave., Campbell. Cost is $144. Call Director Terri Borges at 408.535.8999.

    Arts festival for kids

    Hands on the Arts: A Festival for Children is set for this Saturday, May 20 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Sunnyvale Community Center, 550 E. Remington Ave. Through the day, children will be able to participate in performing and visual arts workshops for $3 per child or $10 maximum per family. Multicultural workshops include music, dance, painting, poetry, theater and sculpture. Children will have the chance to make and see murals, origami, puppets, Chinese kites and world dance. Fifty professional artists from around the Bay Area have volunteered to help host the event, which is sponsored by the City of Sunnyvale and Arts Council Silicon Valley.

    Calling all violinists

    The Foothill Orchestra is looking for advanced string players, especially violinists, to join them for their next concert on June 10. Rehearsals are Thursday evenings from 7 to 10 p.m. at Foothill College. The orchestra is also looking for trombone players and percussionists.     Works to be performed by the orchestra include Brahms' Fourth Symphony, Festival Overture by Shostakovitch, Water Music Suite by Handel and The Great Gate of Kiev by Moussorgsky.

    The orchestra performs June 10 at 8 p.m. in the Smithwick Theater at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills. Tickets are $10 and $7 for students and seniors.

    Ballet scheduled for June

    Ambiente Español presents the 14th annual performance of The Maiden's Visit. a ballet based on a tale by the Brothers Grimm, Saturday, June 3, at the Helene Madson Theater at Monta Vista High School, 21840 McClellan Road in Cupertino. Presented in two acts, the ballet is intended for all ages. Tickets are $11 for adults, $9 for students and seniors, $6 for children 12 and younger. Group discounts are available.     Young artists exhibit 'In Our Likeness'

    Santa Clara University's de Saisset Museum presents In Our Likeness a showcase of works by more than 30 young artists who have participated in Arts Council Silicon Valley's ArtsConnect program, which pairs Bay Area artists with at-risk youth through short and long-term art programs. The exhibit runs through May 24. For more information, call 408.554.4528. The museum, located on the university campus at 500 El Camino Real in Santa Clara, is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
