Library celebrates 85 years
Sunnyvale Mayor Manuel Valerio, local preservationist Ann Hines and fourth-generation resident Deborah Olson will discuss life in Sunnyvale over the past 85 years in a program titled Pages to the Past this Sunday, May 23. Speakers will draw from personal memories about the library, the city and the South Bay. Following the featured speakers, the audience will be invited to share their own memories.
Materials from the library's archives and the Sunnyvale Historical Society, including photographs, newspaper articles and artifacts, will be on display before and after the program.

DAV announces winners of essay contest
Sunnyvale Chapter 148 of the Disabled American Veterans presented awards April 16 to the winners of the annual Americanism contest. About 220 fourth- and fifth-grade students from Sunnyvale's Bishop School wrote essays on the topic "What the American Flag Means to Me."
First prize went to Ryan Phelps, who received a gift certificate to NASA Space Camp in Mountain View. In his essay, Ryan stated, "The American flag means freedom to me ... I say the Pledge of Allegiance every day ... I try to obey my country and be good to my flag. I try my best."
Elizabeth Ayard won second prize and Bina Patel won third. The winning essayists will advance to a statewide contest in June and may have the opportunity to compete in a nationwide contest in August.
City seeks input on family issues
Sunnyvale is holding a Joint Task Force on Families concerning the issues that families face and the role the city can play in supporting families. The forum will be held Thursday, May 27 from 7 to 9 p.m. at City Council Chambers on 456 W. Olive Ave.

Ex-Homestead student wins prize in Spain
Kathleen Balfe, a graduate of Homestead High School, won third prize in the Junior Division of the Gaspar Cassado International Cello Competition in Zaragoza, Spain, a competition named in honor of a Spanish cellist from earlier this century.
Balfe is completing her bachelor's degree in performance at the New England Conservatory of Music. While in Sunnyvale, she performed with the California Youth Symphony, the Palo Alto Chamber Orchestra, the South Valley Symphony and the Fremont Symphony.
