Poster contest winners collect special awards
By Kelly Wilkinson
Toothy grins and fire extinguishers filled City Council chambers at a meeting last month as 18 Sunnyvale schoolchildren were on hand to accept awards for a fire prevention poster contest.
The Kiwanis Club Fire Safety Poster Contest is an annual event sponsored jointly by Sunnyvale Public Safety, the Kiwanis Club and the Sunnyvale Chamber of Commerce. Mayor Manuel Valerio, Sunnyvale Public Safety director Regan Williams and officer Marty Dale awarded three students in each grade a medal, a certificate and either a fire alarm or an extinguisher at the beginning of the evening's meeting. Children in kindergarten through fifth grade participated.
"This is always a delightful moment for the council because it's a chance to see the creativity and expression of the schoolchildren," Valerio said. "And the best protection is to make sure that fires don't start in the first place."
The audience and councilmembers viewed posters crayoned with bright lapping flames, red fire trucks and not-always-straight ladders as the children approached the dais to accept their honors.
Earlier in the day, Burger King on Mathilda Avenue sponsored a recognition lunch for the 18 winners. After the presentation at City Council, officers were on hand with a fire truck to answer questions about fire safety. Posters will be displayed in City Hall for the next month.
In order of first through third place, the winners are: kindergarten: Timothy Yu, Justine Brennan, Kyle Toth; first grade: Sergio Ortiz, Elizabeth Andrews, Gina Ho; second grade: Christina Jung, Daniel Lee, Jayson Dellomes; third grade: Stephanie Chieng, Jessica Tan, Parisa Salimian; fourth grade: Carpus Chang, Tricia Deng, Amanda Lewis: fifth grade: Samantha Fang, Sandra Ponce, Victoria Park.
